ARRIVAL OF THE 'RESACA.'

LATEST FROM

THE FIJIS.

WfiECK OF THfl LULU

By the arrival of the U.S. s.s. 'Resaca,' we have received files of the Fiji Times to August 13, from which we take the following : —

We regret to have to record the l->ss of the fine schooner Lulu, that was so much admired when lying in our harbour, on the night of the 3rd inst , and only a little more than twelve hours after weighing her anchor. From the report of enquiry which was held on Wednesday, by H.B.M.'s Consul, we learn that the accident occured shortly after midnight, during dark and rainy weather, was attributed to a local deviation of the compass of 2J points, the result, we should think, of the large quantity of iron used in her construction, which is on the " composite principle," and the master was exonerated from all blame. Before he left it appears that her false keel was off, her plating forward adrift, and tho starboard side damaged. Abandonment was therefore been recommended, but all material will be saved that can be obtained. Ihe Consul has at the same time appointed two surveyors, who are ou board the Aferlin, to survey the vessel if practicable.

The schooner Kauri ; Captain Shepperd, dropped anchor in harbour on Monday, from Auckland, 17 days out, including a stay of four days at Omaha. She brings several passengers, and a cargo of timber, consigned to Messrs. F. and W. Hennings. She leaves again for Auckland next week.

The schooner Merlin arrived in harbour on Monday, from Auckland, after a passage of 15 days. She brings a cargo of timber and colonial produce. She is, we believe, chartered to proceed to the New Hebrides.— limes, August 6.
