LONDON, July 7. The Irish Land Bill has been read a second time in the House of Lords, and after several amendments, passed through committee on the 28th June. Five more of the brigands implicated in the Marathon massacre were hanged at Athens on the 20th June. A collision occurred on the Great Northern Railway, near Newark, between a passenger and a goods train, which resulted in the death of sixteen persons, and serious injury to a large number. The degree of D.C.L. was conferred on the Duke of Argyll, Sir W. Mansfield, and Admiral Keppeli at the Oxford Commemoration. Mr. Trevallyn, M.P., has resigned his office as one of "the Lords of the Admiralty, in consequence of a difference with his colleagues on tbe Education Question. Vice-Chancellor Sir William James has been appointed Chief Justice of the Chancery Court of Appeal, vice Baron Selwyn, deceased. The petition for winding-up the European Assurance Company was dismissed, on the ground that the petitioners had not paid up their calls. The revenue of the United Kingdom for the quarter ending 30th June amounted to £16,300,000. The American cetton crop exceeds that of last year. The Anglo-Mediterranean Telegraph Company propose laying a duplicate cable to Alexandria. The House of Commons rejected an amendment on the Education Bill for the gratuitous instruction of children. The House of Representatives at Washington have passed a resolution, requesting the President to inquire from the English Government, by what right American fishing-boats are stopped on their voyages on the fishing grounds. JThe English and French Government are in communication relative to the rectification of tbe map of the lied Sea. Jln consequence of the success of the 'ifatholics at the elections in Belgium the Ministry are expected to resign. An earthquake shock was experienced at Alexandria, Cairo, Suez, ana at Santorini in the Greek Archipelago, where a town was destroyed and a small island submerged. The French contingent of 90,000 men was outvoted by 203 against 31. The Orleans Princes wrote to the French Corps Legi-jlatif, asking for an abridgment of the decree of banishment;
the Government declared the time inopportune to grant their request, and the Corps rejected the petition by 172 against 13 votes. The Emperor is better, and presided at a Council of Ministers. Queen Isabella has signed her abdication of the Spanish trone in favor of the Prince of the Asturias. A Spanish deputation has arrived in Prussia to offer the Crown to Prince Hohenzollern, who has accepted the candidature ; the French Press aud political parties opposed General Prim's projects ; M. * llivie_ declared that the French Government desired peace, but with honor: if war was necessary it wouln not be declared without the consent of the Corps Legislatif. The Cabinets of London, Florence and Vienna are disposed to join in the diplomatic action of France for the removal of the difficulties which have] arisen in consequence of Prince Hohenzollern's candidature ; the Due de Grammont stated that France will not suffer a foreign power to place Hohenzollern on the throne of Spain, and the statement received loud applause in the Corps Legislatif. The debate on the infallibility of the Pope has terminated in the CEcumenical Council, and the dogma is voted. A banquet was give on June 22nd by the Chairman of tbe British Indian Telegraph Company. The Prince of Wales was present. Messages were sent and replies received. The Viceroy of Egypt, the Viceroy of India, President Grant, and Lord Mayo exchanged messages. Mr. Kirkman Hodgson, a Liberal, was elected member for Bristol. Obituary. — Sir Archibald Bogle, Marquis of Lothian, and Earl of Paddington.
