BREAKING DOWN OF THE PENGUIN. Ohristchuuch, January 29. The steamer Penguin is reported broken down off Now Plymouth.

INDECENT ASSAULT.

At the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, Win. Leake was committed for trial on a charge of indecent assault on a child of tender years in a vacant section in Gloucester street, Chrietchurch.

THE MURPHYS AGAIN.

An order for maintenance was made to ■ day on the notorious Michael Murphy, his wife and three helpless - ones being the unfortunate ones concerned.

THE SEWING MACHINE CASE.

At the City Police Court, Dunedin, Thos. Dobbie, of Dunedin, was committed for trial on two charges of stealing sewing machines.

THE DUNEDIN TRAMCAR CASE.

The information against Mr Proudfoot, the tramway proprietor, for not using noiseless engines,was dismissed at Dunedin.

THE CROPS. The following about the .crops was received to-day:— fiMARU—It rained heavily yesterday afternoon, but is now clearing up. There ie no reported damage to the crops. Probably the heavier crops may Le laid somewhat, and harvest operations may be delayed for four or five days. Ashburton—Had heavy i-ain yesterday afternoon and last night, but the crops, so far as I can learn, have suffered no damage. The harvest work is stopped tor two or three daya. Southbridqe—Harvest operations are stopped. It was very wet yesterday and last night. The weather is cloudy-now, but bo rain has fallen since daylight. Reaping has again commenced. Darweld— The weather is dull, but it is not raining at present. Do not think any one ie cutting to-day, owing to the crope being vret.

DEATH BY DROWNING,

The eldest daughter of Mr R. P. Williams, of Napier, a sheep farmer, near West Clive, was found drowned yesterday evening. The young lady was missed at tea tiino on Saturday, and not being found on the premises, an extended search was made, and the neighbors communicated with. The search continued all day on Sunday, when the body was found in a deep pool at toe back of the house. >•

BURNING OF THE HAVELOCK HOTEL.

The Exchange Hotel, Havelock, was totally destroyed by fire laat night. ■ The building contained tvrenty-thiee rooms, and was insured for £1000—the furniture for £800 and the etock for £200, all in the Union at Wellington.

THE MISSING MAN FOUND

The body of the man McMahon, who has been missing since Monday last, was found this morning on the sea beach at Kaiwarrawarra. It is surmised that While searching for his child, which had wandered away, he fell into the Hutt river and was drowned.

KILLED BY .A FALL FROM A HOUSEi

A lad named Francis Ward Pearce, aged 17, eon of James Pearce, farmer, at Pahautaunui, was thrown from hie horse yesterday morning and killed.

FIRE AT GREYTOWN.

By a bueh fire at Grey town, the resi? dence of James Tweed ale, a carpenter, was destroyed. The origin of the fire is attributed to children throwing lighted matches in the scrub; The premises were owned by Mr Bidwill, a run holder at' Tweedale. Hβ estimates hie loss at £100.
