Peninsula News.

The Mail. —The San Francisco mail anived per Wanaka lust night.

Educational. —Mr Granger's school broke up for the holidays on Wednesday, on which day the prizes were distributed, the result of the examination was that prizes were awarded to A. Tosswill, J. Daly, and V. Kissel.

Shearing Extraordinary. — George Brough, late of Akfiroa, is reported in a Wanganui paper as having accomplished the font of shearing no lose than 154 sheep, in a shed near Wanganui, in less than nine hours.

Akaroa School.—The annual distribution of prizes in connection withthe Borough School takes place at 2 p.m. to-day. His Worship the Mayor has kindly consented to picsent the prizes, owing to theunavoidablo absence of Mr Wes.tenn, the chairman.

The Anniversary.—As will be 6een by advertisement, the Government offices throughout the Canterbury Provincial District, witli the exception of the Post and Telegmph Departments, will be closed to-morrow in honor of tho Anniversary of the province.

Property Tax.—As will be seen elsewhere, ptatements of property for tha year commencing April Ist, 1883, must be sent in to the Property Tax Commissioner Government Buildings, Wellington, on or before Dec. 20th. Forms can be obtained of tho assessors, or at the Post Offices.

R.M. Court.—At the Court on Tuesday last, before W. B. Tosawill, and T. Adams Esq.'a, J.P.V, J. J. Kissel sued T. Brough for £3 Ir. Judgement was given for plaintiff for amount and costs. G. Ward v. Joneph Brown ; claim £2. There was no appearance of either plaintiff or defendant, so the case was struck out. Some minor cases were settled out of court.

Carrying tub Competing Boats.—Tl:e U.S.S. Co. have kindly consented to carry the light racing bo its that are coming to compete at our Regatta, free of charge. A large open boat was refused, as it was thought it might bo in the way on the ILiwea with so many passenger.-i. Tho agent (Mr Pnflett.) however, kindly con - sented to send it by the Wanaka free of all charge.

Extension of thk Little Rivkr Railway.—All residents will bo glad to hear that there in an immediate prospect of the next section of the Little Rivor Railway being at once tendered for. Oar indefatigable member telegraphed us on Tuesday as follows :—•' Had an interview with the Minister of Public Works yesterday re frifidero for oxtenaioM of Little River Railway. He promised that tenders should be called for immediately.—W. Montgomery." We see by the Press that tenders have been called fur the work.

The Yacht Dovis.— The yacht Dove arrived at oneo'clock yesterd \y. She left Lyttelton on Tuesday, in C-ipt. D'mps-ey's charge, and had light westerly winds to Godley Heads, then easterly and F>.E. winds to Waikerakari, when she put back to Le Bon's, which place .she loft yesterday at i n.in arriving ns above. She towud up the Fmigh-a-ihl'ugh. which enters for the open boat sailing race. The Dave i«s in excellent trim below and aloft, and does great credit to Oapt. and her owner Mr WVtlitrall.

Cricket.—As will be aeon by advertisement in another column, a inuir! costume cricket match will be played on Bosing Day, under the auspices of the Akaroa Cricket Club, in aid of the funds. We understand that sever.il citizens have consented to take part in the game. Those of our readers who have never seen anything of the kind may look for a thorough day's funiand enjoyment. Members of the Club desiring to play should give in their names and a descri prion of the costumes they intend wearing at once, to Mr Granger, who will be glad to receive the nanus of any non-members of the club who will kindly assist the club. The game will probab'y be played with fifteen a side.

Condensation.—Sir J u 1 iiis Vogei arrived at the Bluff on Wβ Inesday, and went on to Dunedin. His advent was a surprise —The Hauroto, the U.S.S. Company's now steamer, reached Melbourne on Welnesday, after a 48 days trip.—Auckland made 89 in the mitch against Nelson in the Ist innings, and Nelson only 33.— The following telegram has been received Uy Mr Chryatall:—" Wellington, Dec. 13, 1882. In reply to your telegram of Dec. J, I have to inform you that if the present Commission does not deal fully with the question of the West Coast Railway, another Commission will be appointed to consider thcj various routes, so that full information may he laid before next session of Parliament. (Signed) Thomas Dick."—The period of three years pledged on behalf of the Colony during which New Zealand would not again enter the London market, has expired, and it is understood that powers for raising the first million of the loan authorised last session have been transmitted to the loan agents in London.

Port Victoria Racing Club.—The animal meeting of members of the Port Victoria Racing Club, was held at the \Vheat Sheaf Hotel, Head of the Bay, on Thursday, Dec. 7th. Thero were ten members present. The secretary read the balance sheet, showing £41 17s 3d in hand for the ensuing year. It was resolved that the races beheld on Thursday, March Bth, and that the Welcome Stakes he struck off the programme, and a County Hurdle Rice be substituted for it, value 15 soys. Resolved that there be a Trotting Race added to the programme, value £5, with a £1 sweep each horse added. The following Gentlemen were elected stewards, viz., Messrs Edwards, A. McDonald, E. Pimm, A. R. Fleming, L. Gardiner, jun, H. Hawkins, jun, Hugh Manson, and J. Judge We are glad to state there is a very satisfactory balance in hand this year, and that the stakes will amount in all to £120. Mr Orton Bradley, the Hon. Sec, is, as usual, sparing no pains to make the meeting a success.

An Auckland Drinking Affray.—On Wednesday afternoon a man named Robt. Haidy, aged forty, was brought to the Hospital in a cab by Orchard, & publican, and a woman, who stated she was Hardy's wifo. Hardy was in a state of unconsciousness and much contused about the face, and it was at once seen he was dying. Hejhad two convulsive fits, and expired half an hour after admission. Orchard and Mrs Hardy stayed only a few minutes. An examination of the body after death shoewd a cut on the right temple ond an abrasion neir the cut. There is also a cut under the right eye and a bruise adjacent. The lobe of the left ear is abraded, as well as the side of the temple. The left temple and nose are contused. Urchard told the hospital nurse that the deceased had been fighting and had stoqd great " punishment." Mrs Haidy was in such a state of excitement that little couid be got out of her. She was understood to say that Hardy was drunk and going to strike a man, missed his blow and fell d'jwn :he had been drinking. Ever since he took t > his bed, and on Saturday and yesterday began to take fits. Enquiries subsequently made at Orchard's Hotel, where deceased has been staying, elicited a statement that clashed with those given at the Hospital. At the inquest in the afternoon, Hardy was said to be in comfortable circumstances and intending to open an hotel in Auckland.

Akaroa Horticultural and Industrial Association —A meeting of the committee wae held on Tuesday evening last. Present —Messrs Newton. Bicknell. Jacobeon, and S. Watkins (Hon. Sec.) Mr Jacobson was made chairman, and the minutes having been read and confirmed, correspondence was read as follows :— From Mr Montgomery—"Christchurcli, Bth Dec, 1882. Dear Sir, —I am in receipt of your letter of the sth instant, in which you inform me that the committee of your society wishes me to open the annual exhibition on the Ist January next. In reply, I beg to say I will gladly comply with the request, and thank the committee for the compliment paid to me.— Youra, etc., W. Montgomery." The committee thanked Mr Montgomery for his acquiesence. From Borough Council regretting inability to accede to society's request for a grant in aid. From Mesdames Ayliner and W. C. Jacobson, and Mr A. I. McGregor, consenting to act as judges at Industrial Exhibition. From Messrs Sealey Bros., R Chudley, and 11. Crooks, regretting their not being able to act as judges of Horticultural Show. From Messrs Nairn and Son, stating that Mr D. N lirn would act, if a steamer was coming on that day. It was resolved to write to Mr Nairn on the subject of his coming down, ar.d ask him to bring a friend to assist him if possible. It was determined to ask Messrs Piper and Saxton to act as judges of vegetables. The Hon. Sec. stated Mr Gnrwood was unavoidably absent, but that a musical clock had been sent by that gentlemen to him, being a present from Messrs Briscoe & Co. Mr Jacobson reported the concert was being arranged. It having been agreed that the appointment of sub committees should be left till a subsequent meeting, and o'th'T routine business having been transacted, the meeting adjourned till Tuesday nest, Dec. 19, same place and hour,
