The Akaroa Mail. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1882.

THE REGATTA.

To-moiirow is the groat day of the .year in Akaroa, when she puts on her -holiday garments, and welcomes her visitors fVom the North and South, who come to witness the Regatta and have a ple&sant trip on the water. Judgingfron the entries, there will be a capital, day'?, sport, and wo hone th'f, wo shall be "ble to chronicle a ..crrent in onr next issue.

It hi a gmufc pity thai so '(ar our liberal prugnirnrne hay not atlracUul Siim<; y«ch!s from Wniiingfcon or Dunc'iin, bat it is even now possible the Tliwtis ctrnfi at the hivt uioinonl, -cid 'vi sincerely h.,,10 ah<... u-iil. Hup- '■ -sin i j\ liu^cvi 1 ! , , tii.'it the nice is oon-

fined to the three at present in harbor, it is likely tubs a very exciting one, for the Dove, the winner of last year, will luiviuo try conclusions with the Zephyr, a very d-mgerous ft k> in light winds ; nnd if it blows a strong gal , , the stiff little "Chunce" will no doubt give a god necount of herself. May it be a closely contested race from start to finish, and may the smartest vessel win, for victories which are the r , suit of an accident are always unsatisfactory.

Tho sailing race in op"ii boats promises to bo very well contested. As in the yacht race there is only one competitor against o.ir local boats, but she (the Faugh a B.illaji) Ims proved herself a good one. The b>ats of the Commodore and Messrs Renning and Baker are so good that it will be a pleasure to see them try conclusions with tho stranger.

The two principal rowing events will be the keenest contests fur boats of their class ever tried in Akaroa, and we hope there will be a smooth sea, so that all may have, a good chance. With the boats from Christehnrch ; and Tirnaiu, Kaiapoi, Lyttclton, and Akaroa also represented, the sight should be one to make a rowing man's nerves tingle.

Ths minor races will also probably afford a gieat deal of competition and amusement, and. we believe that if favored with a fair day we shall have one of the best Regattas yet witnessed in Akaroa ; and if so, we shall expect to see even luger prizes offered next year, and a big four oar event into the bargain.
