The Akaroa Mail. TUESDAY, JULY 18, 1882. CURRENT NOTES.
THE LOCAL SELF-GOVERNMENT QUESTION. It is much to be regretted that the meeting which was to have been held at the Hill Top Hotel on Saturday last fe'l through, for we believe that, had there been a full gathering, a mutual understanding might have been arrived at, that wouhl have been beneficial t*j the community. It was certainly a very wet day, but then, as is usually the case, some of (host? who had the worst journey to perform were present, whilst others, who were comparatively clo*.e at hand, did not put in an appearance, Probably several who would otherwise have gone did not think it worth.while, being Ov opinion there would be no quorum. Thee is, in our opinion, little hope now that any uniled action will be tjken by our local bodies in this matter before the Government bilis on the subject are discussed, but as both the County Council and the Akaroa and Wainui Road Board meet on the 29th of this month, we should suggest that any suggestions on the subject might be made by letter to those bodies, so that they might be ventilated. We did not, and do not, approve of the course pursued by the Government in asking the advice of all the local bodies on these matters, because we believe that the diversity of bpinions expressed will' tend more to bewilder than to enlighten hon. members, most of whom, being members of local bodies themselves, are very tolerable judges of the main requirements of County Councils and Road Boards. Nevertheless, we believe that if tiie other local bodies state thei'* peculiar views on these mitters, thePeninsu'a people should also say what theirs are ; and if the miserable weather last Saturday prevented them doing so as one body, they can, as we suggest take the opportunity afforded by the County Council and. Road Board meetings mentioned, to give vent to any important views on thrse vital matters that naoy occur to them. We cannot conclude without a word of commendation on those geutlemen who, in topite of persona! discomfort, showed their true interest in matters affecting the County by being pr.-sent at Saturday's meeting.
