AKAROA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

There being no quorum on Friday, the special meeting of thisCo.inc.il re levels of Jolie street was he'd last night. P-esen.— His Worship the Mayor and ds Black. Waeckerle, Brown, Scott, Cullen, Bruce, and McGregor. The levels as proposed by the Engineer were discussed, the general opinion appealing to be that they were too low at Britain street, Cr Cullen suggesting 12 inches more. Eventually Cr McGregor moved—"Thai plan No. 2, showing levels from Goodwin's Bri.ige to Briitain street, ba abandoned in the meantime."

Seconded by Cr Waeckerle and carried. Cr McGregor then moved—" That plans Nos. 1 and 3. showing levels of Jo'ie street from Goodwin's Bridge to the Public School, be the levels of the said stieet, in terms of seciion 192 of "The Mun ; cipal Corpora, ions Act. 1876." Seconded by Cr Black and carried. Ordinary Meeting. Hie ordinary meeting w: i then held, the

same councillors being present, and also Cr Gutberlet.

CORRESPONDENCE.

Letters were read—

From Returning Officer, announcing Mr Scott's e>ction ns councillor, and that MessisS. Watkins and Nicholls had been re-elected auditors

From tho Timnni Wreck Fund Commiitee. asking ihe town to contribute towards the relief fund.

Cr Black said that he thought the Mayor should see that some subscription list should be put in circulation.

Cr Waeckerle approved, he thought Akaroa hnd been backward in the mntler.

The Mayor said if Councillors had attended at the meetings tho mailer would have been airanged before.

Cr McGregor objected to any part of the money raised ' being devofed to the erection of n memorial.

Cr Black thought that matter should be left to the discren'on of the Timaru committee. Tt was resolved : "That a committee he formed to raise for the Timaru Wreck I'nnd Commiiiee, to consist of the Rev. H. Mocker. lis Worship the Mayor, and Messrs H. C. Jacohson and Black.

From Mr Lelievre as follows;— '■ Akaroa, May 15.1882,

"Gentlemen, —T beg respectfully to again draw the attention of the Council to the very great difficulty I have in reaching my house, through the Council not havTig done anything to Muiler street. I hope tbat the Council will take this street inlo co/-; 2 ?derat ; on, and find it convenient fo do BonH thing in it to make it passable before tho winter sets in.—Yours, etc.,

After discission it was resolved on tbe motion of Cr McGregor, seconded by Cr Waeckasle, "That the Works Comooii.ee be authorised to employ Mr Wilkins to re grade Muter street, from Balgne'ie street to the S.E. corner of section 17, and at the same I'rae keep in view the grading of Benoit street, furn'shing the Council with plan and estimate of cost."

From Mr S. Watkins as follows :— "Akaroa, May 16, 1881. "Gentlemen.—l beg io call your attention to the spread of gorse along the sections from Harris' corner to the beach. If something is not done to abate this nuisance, it will eventually cause much trouble and considerable expense. I also wish to call the Council's atlention lo the drain opposite the same road. At present the whole drainage is thrown into the Domain, doing considerable damage, and causing that por'ion of the grounds o be qui.e a swamp. I think it would not be much expense to have a drain cut, to allow the water to run down to the beach. The following tenders for the >i«;ht of g-azwg the Town Reserves were :

For Leliev-e's H«II Reserve—F. c £10, C. A. Pich £16, P. O'Reilly £U

For Reseve Ht back of Roman Cathobc Church—E. Diteley £24. The lenders of C. A. Rich and E. Diteley, were accepted. For lighting lamp on Wharf there was only one tender of £20 a year from Mr Burke. The tender was accepted, WHARF R'iGUCAT'ONS. The letter from tbe Marine Boa r d (already published) was further considered. Afier discussion, it was moved— '* That the Government be requested to make the Order in Council without exemption, and that the Government be info'ined thai: tbe Counc'l intend to charge on imports a'one." Cr McGregor moved, and Cr Cullen seconded, an amendment 'o the effect that exporis should also be charged for. The Mayor ruled the amendment out of order, as it meant ihe rescinding of a previous resolution of the Council. The original resolution was then put and carried. THIS OLD WHARF TIMBER. The matter of sel'ing the t'mber was left in the hands of the Wharf Committee. THE ESTIMATES. Tne estimates aa prepared by the subcommittee wee read, adopted, and o-tiered to be adver ised. The Council then adjourned.
