There was a good attendance at the Ashburton Races to-day, Why Not won the District Hurdles, Lone Hand 2. The Cup went to the Envy filly, Poet being 2, and Sir Modred 3.

Thelnterprovincial Bicycle Races, under the auspices of the Pioneer Bicycle Club, were held at Lancaster Park to-day, and were a great success. The chief event, the Interprovinoial Champion Race, was won by Allison, Cutten (Dunedin) 2, Dillton (favorite) 3. The second annual exhibition of the Auckland Society of Arts opened to-day. There were 500 exhibits and it was most successful.

A body brought from Kaipani to Auckland has been identified by several friends as that of Capl. McKenzie of the Rona. The body previously found and buried as Capt. McKenzie's is supposed to have been that of the mate, Mr Smith.

The polling on tlie local option question in the North Ward, Napier, took place yesterday. There was r. majority against an increase of licenses of 31.

In the criminal libel case in Dunedin against Mr Hitchcock at the instance of Mr Qiiinn, master of the Benevolent Institution, the prosucution denied the truth of the charges made in a libellous letter. The defence merely entered the plea of not guilty. An excursion by tiain to Waikari was a great success. There were 22 carriages from Christchurch. and more were added en route. When leaving Amberley to-day there were no less than 750 pa-sengers, and about 50 were disappointed, as thi-re was no room.

At the ordinary meeting of the Board of Education to-day, Mr was elected chairman for the ensuing y<-;ir.

The Aurora Australis was again visible to-night, due east. It was very brilliant.
