Surprise is expressed that Mr Parnell, who since being liberated on parole has been visiting Paris, has not surrendered to-day, as required by the authorities. A report is current in London this evening that be has been shot whilst en route for England, but the news has not been con firmed, and it is generally believed that ho is still in Paris. Later. It is now definitely known that the report that an attempt had been made on the lite of Parnell while en route for London is entirely without foundation. Reliable information is to hand to the effect that he is still staying in the neighborhood of Paris. A special Commission has been appointed to try Roderick McLean, who attempted to shoot the Queen, anil why was committed for trial un a charge of
high treason by the Windsor magistrates on March 10th. The Commission bold its iin--t sitting at Reading to-day. The body of the Eight Rev. Bishop Barker, of Sydney, who ded on the 6th instant, has been buried at iiarlon, Derbyshire, his birthplace. April 19, Morning. A disastrous explosion has occurred in Tudse Colliery, near Durham. A large number of miners were at wjark at the time of the explosion, and, so far as is at present known, 35 have met their death. Tliu police have effected the capture at Cork of ten persons on a charge of treason. The arrests were made on the strength of evidence given to the authorities by an informer who was previously an accomplice of the prisoners. Evening. The case of Roderick McLean, the would be assassin of theQuoeti, was to-day again brought before the special commission sitting at Reading. After a full enquiry the prisoner was found not guilty of the charge of treason on the ground that be was not in a sano condition when he committed the act.
McLean will consequently be detained during her Majesty's pleasure. It is announced that Parnell will return from France on Monday next, 24th instant, when he will surrender to his parole. A Bill providing that what may be defined as the necessary expenses of election to Parliament should be charged to the rites of the borough, county or district in whbh the election takes place, was read a second time in the House of Commons to-day. The measure has been introduced by a private member, but receives the support of the Government. The death is announced to-day of Sir Henry Cole, the well known author and administrator, formerly director of the South Kensington Museum, aged 74. Paris, April 18.
A robbery of postal packages, containing valuables and securities estimated to be worth a million francs, was committed from the Central Post Office in this city. No clue to the perpetrators of the theft has yet been obtained, Washington, April 18.
The new measure recently introduced in the House of Representatives providing for the total exclusion of the Chinese from the United States for a period of ten years was finally agreed to by the House last evening.
