PROPOSED REFRIGERATING COMPANY.
A meeting of gentlemen interested in the above project (says the Press) was hold at the C. A. and P. Association rooms, Hereford street, at 9.30 yesterday morning. Present—Hons. E. Richardson and Matthew Hoitnes, Messrs John Grigg;, J. D Enys, John Cooko 11. Westenra, George Hart, D Holmes, E. S.Hnrley. J. McArthur, A. M. Clarke, and John Macfarlane.—Mr Giigg, aa one of: the conveners of the meeting, wished the attendonce had been larger. The reason for his action in this matter was the increase of stock in tha provincial district, the increase in sheep alone during the past season being 370 OCO, and he was certain that enough stock could be found to keep a meat freezing company going. Large as the increase in sheep seemed, it would increase still more during the next few years, as large quantifies of land requiring rest would be turned into sheep walk?. During that period he thought that unless the proposed company was started now the price of stock would decrease. It need not be imagined that there was not enough stock both for dairying and freezing for export. They con d start on a small scale, and he knew that one of the largest machines at constant work or six months would use up frem 30.0D0 to 40,000 sheep. He would remind them that similar steps to what he proposed had been taken in Auckland, Napier and Otago, vnd it would be n pity in Canterbury, which produced more stock than any other district did not avail itself of this method of disposing of its largely increasing surplus. He would propose—'• That having in view the large quantities of beef, mutton, butter, cheese, &i\, that is produced in the district o£'Canterbury for which no market can be found, and were facilities offered for export the great quantity which could bo raised, this meeting is of opinion that it is desirable to form a company to undertake the freezing, exporting, and selling in England of beef, mutton, butler, cheese, &c." Mr Enys seconded the resolution, which after remarks by Messrs Grigg and Westenra, was carried ncm. con. It was proposed by Mr Westenra, seconded by Mr J. Cooke, and carried unanimously—"Thatwith a view of carrying out the foregoing resolution, a committee be formed for the purpose of enciting information and reporting to a meeting to be convened as early as possible that Hon. E. Richardson, Messrs John Grigg, John Mnefarlane, John Studhohnc, John Holmes, John Tinline, George Hart, A. M. Clarke, Geo. Gould, L. Wilkin, John Cooke, and R. Westenra, be requested to act as such committee." Mr Cooke and the Hoo, E. Richardson gave information to the meeting respecting the Maianra, which vessel is coming to Lyttelton iittod with one of Hasalm's best machines, and that a freezing chamber and moat-room were being prepared on bonrd. The Hon. M. Holmes gave particulars of what, had been done in this direction in Otago. Mr F. Wayinouth was appointed secretary pro tern.
