AKAROA AND WAINUI ROAD BOARD.

J A meeting of this Road Board was held on Saturday. Present Messrs McDonald, (in tho cluir) Brooks and Checkley. MINUTES. The minutes of tho previous meeting were read and conlirmed. INTERVIEWS. Mr George Kearney waited upon this Board, asking for a track to his property in Gough's Bay. Mr Checkley asked if he was prepared to assist tiie Board. Mr Kearney said he would do so if the cost was not too much. The Clerk was instructed to visit the locality and report. THE POUND. The pound-keeper waited on tho Board, asking why the cattle trough had not been furnished as promised. He submitted his quarterly return, but objected to the form used, and asked that forms in accordance with the schedule in the Cattle Trespass Ordinance, 1872, should in future be furnished to him. WA2NUI VALLEY BRIDGE. Mr John Wright waited on the Board in reference to the timber to bo used for this bridge, and also of the other materials to be used. The matter was left in the Board's hands. CORKESPONDENCE. A petition was read from ratepayers in Ay liner's Valk-y, as follows:— !; Aylmer's Valley, Oct. 23, 1881.' '' Gen'Jemen, —We, the undersigned

rate piyers residing in Aylmer's Valley, wish to respectfully draw your attention to the state of the above named Valley road, it is impassable for any wheeled vehicle, and almost so for horse traffic. Trusting .that you will give the matter your earliest, attention,— We are, etc., Signed—John Bruoe, Robert Newton, William Bruce. Samuel Fyfe, David Fyfe, John Porter." It was agreed the work should be done. From tho Rorough Council, Akaroa, as follows:-— " Sir, —I have the honor by direction of the Akaroa Borough Council, to acknowledge the receipt of yours of the 18th inst, notifying tho appointment , by your Board of a deputation re the disputed point of the northern boundary of your district.—Yours etc., '• W. Sims, Town Clerk." After Mr Checkley and the Clerk had reported re tho deputation, it was resolved on the motion of Mr Checkley that the hole in Lavaud street, at Waeckerle'a, should be repaired, putting in a culrert long enough to discharge into the main creek, and build a good stone wall from the junction of the Borough culvert till it joins Mr Waeckerle's land abutting on the creek. From the Little River Road Board as follows : — " Sir, —I have the honor by direction to acknowledge receipt of yours of the 3rd and 15th ulto.,and to inform you, in reply, thafthe founer had reached too late for consideration in time to attend your meeting, and that with reference to your resolution, asking for the co-operation of this Board, by calling meetings of ratepayers in each riding, with a view to electing members to represent them in the County Council who would pledge thnnselves not to enforce Clause 107 of the Counties Act, this Board, while sympathising with the object of your resolution regret to say, that so little interest is taken in the aitairs of the County Council in this district, that select candidates could scarcely be found willing to represent the ratepayers, even should the Board desire men with indifferent opinions from their present representatives.—Yours etc.,

" T. Quealy, Clerk," From Messrs Harper and Co. as follows " Christchurch, Oct 20, 1881.

" Sir, — In reply to your letter of the 18th Oct., ult, we have the honor to state that we are of opinion that the contractors cannot claim driving fees in impounding cattle from off the toads which they may be making , under their contracts. If cattle are found straying on roads they may bo impounded and the owner is liable to a penalty, but the person driving such cuttle to the pound cannot claim driving fees, — see Cattle Trespass Ordinance 1872, sec. 4. The Eoard would not be liable to con • trs>ctors in the face of the claim in the specifications.—We are, etc.,

" Harper & Co." From the County Council as follows :— " Duvauchelle's Bay, Oct. 22,1881.

"Sir—l have the honor i>y direction of the Akaroa County Council to forward to you copy of the following resolutions passed at a meeting of this Council held this day.

Ist. "That all that portion of the Old Duvauchelle's Bay road, forming respectfully the north-eastern and south-western boundary of rural sections 332, 856 and 752, situated in the Akaroa nrid Wainui road district, County of Aharoa, plans and descriptions of which are now before the Council—be stooped, in accordance with "The Public Works Act, 1880," section 4, sub-section («■).

2nd. "That all the portion of tho Le Bon's Bay road, commencing at a junction of the said Le Bon's Bay ro id, with the main Valley road, German Bay, and forming respectively the south-eastern and north-western boundary of rural sections 1922 and 881 till it joins the south-eastern corner of section 18G, thence forming the northern and southern bonnclary of rural sections 2388 and 1922 till it jm'na the present Lo Bon's Bay road in German Bay, County of Akaroa, plans and descriptions of which are now before the Council—be slopped, in accordance with "Tho Public Works Act, 1880," section 4, sub-section (g).

''The plans and description of the said roads I am forwarding with this letter.— Yours etc.,

E. S. Latter, Clerk of Council. From Mr McGregor as follows :— "Akaroa, Nov. 12, 1881.

" Gentlemen, —As the annual period at which Valuations Rolls require to be formed I beg to offer to compile the roll for your district in terms of " The Rating Act 1876," and attend all sittings of the Assessment Court for the sum of fifteen pounds str., payable at the convenience of the Board. I may say that during the past year I have kept a note of changes in holdings, etc., with a view to the above.— Yours, etc , "A. I. McGUEGOU." It was resolved that Mr McGregor's tender bo accepted. PAYMENTS. Accounts amounting to £40 10s Sd were passed for payment as follows :—E. Chap man, 10s 6d ; John Bullock, £4 ; John Bullock, £1 (donation for saving bridge at Wainui during last flood) ; Austin Kirk & Co., £12 Is ; J. Barwick, £10 8s 8d ; Kedge& Wright, 14s ; W. McKay, £4 18s; J. Bullock, £3 5s ; Geo. Lardner, 15s Gil ; Wight & Bruce, £1 13s 6tl ; W. D Wilkiu, £1 4s Gd ; total, £40 10s Bd. TENDERS. Tenders were opened for the following works :— Pawson's Valloy road—Robt. A. Stewart, £10 10s ; John Gunning, £25 ; P. Shadbolt & Co., £18. MrStewart's[tender was accepted. Long Bay Summit road—L. P. Johnston £28 ; O'Sullivan & Wanl, £23. It was resolved to accept O'Sullivan & Ward's tender. Waimii Valley Bush—R. Stewart, 18s Gd per chain. Thrown out l>y the Board as exorbitant. It was further resolved to call for fresh tenders. LETTERS. The Clerk was instructed to write to Mr Harper re Rhodea's Flat, and to Mr Peter Shadbolt re keeping the Old Pigeon Bay road in repair, according to his contract, odell's road. The question of repairing this road was left in the hands of tho Clerk to see about. The Chairman pointed out that the Board was desirous of improving those bye-roads, but was anxious to see that tho residents should help themselves. AUJOUUXJIKN'T.
