Commercial.
Akaboa Mail Office, Monday Evening. It is the intention of the present proprietors of this journal to given weekly lesmne of the businessdone, and currant quotations for the leading articles of merchandise and produce in the district, believing that such a course, if carefully and impartially carried out will operate for the benefit of ■buyers and sellers on the Peninsula. Any information 2elating to commercial niat-itera-in the County on being communicated 'to the Editor, will have their place amongst • our weekly memoranda. Dairy farmers have now all got well to work wilh cheese making for the coming season, and what with the getting of their dairies and utensils in order, and feeding calves, have their, hands quite full. Old cheese is now pretty well cleared out of the dailies, and the *iew supply when fit for the market will,no doubt command better prices than those obtained last year. The satisfactory price obtained for the Little Akaloa and Southbridge shipment*, and the prospects of a direct steam communication with) Great Britain shortly, have given our dairy fanners fresh hopes for the future. Little ernothing is doing in butter beyo d supplying the local retail wants at Is per lb. The I'eninsula butter makers generally, having a great deal to lenrn before they compete successfully with their brethren on the Feed is now fairly plentiful for this season and with the recent showers and genial weather should immediately be in abundance. Wβ hear there is a groat demand for good dairy cows, several farms being short through the deaths during the past winter. S.ore cattle are-enquired after, and dealers and sellers can obtain remunerative prices for them, the recent drop at the Ohristchurch yards has not as yet apparently affected this neighborhood Butchers now have some difficulty in supplying therr wants in mutton, shearing will, however, shortly commence, and easier terms will rule. Mr Biniling of Lake View S.fation htarts shearing on the 4th of next month, and other flocks follow in succession. All over the district we hoar reports of large increases, in Rome casus as uniiiy as a hundred per cent. Several small landowner are going in for sheep, and the demand will be considerable aftor shearing. Pigs a™ quite neglected at present. This not being the season for " his payin' .the rint." We hear of large tracks of land being shut up for grass seed purposes. Cocksfoot is now quite out of the market and recent sales have been effected at 4cl per lb. There seems to be a general consensus of opinion, which we sh ire, tli it this seed will ruie much higher this coming soason. Kye is also largely inquired for but our county is unsuitable, we fear, for its profittible production. We note that the Peninsula Farmers Glub have landing ex Kangitekei in Lytteltoti., a shipment of Hansen's cheese coloring and rennet extract. A consignment of this will also be brought under the hammer at the Town Hah on Saturday, so that farmers can have their wants in these important articles, well and cheaply supplied.
