AKAROA AND WAINUI ROAD BOARD.
October 30th, 1880.
A meeting of this Board was held on the above date at their offices, Duvauchelle's Bay. Present: —Messrs Chappell (in the chfiir), McDonald. Piper, Shadbolt, and Williams.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
INTERVIEWS. I Mr John Bullock waited upon the Board

finished He was asked to send in an offer for filling in the slip in the French Farm road.
Mr Siiilivan was in attendance in regard to his contract. The Clerk stated that he had not visited the work, and therefore could not report on it. Mr Marlindale came to pay his rates,but maintained that the Board was indebted to him in t'.ic sum of Gs. He wished to deduct that amount from the rate
After considerable conversation, Mr Martindale was informed that the Board
could not entertain the claim
Mr Martindale then formally tonderod the amount of his rates less Ga, and informed the Board that, if he were summoned, he should pay that amount into Court, and dispute the balance.
Mr J. Hartley, as bailiff of the R. M. Court, attended with a claim for £15 9s in the case of McNeil 1 v. the Board.
A cheque for the amount was ordered to
be paid.
Mr S. Hunt waited on the Board to ask for some coin on account of his bridge contract.
He was informed that at present no funds were avnilnhln.

Mr Jas. Brown was in attendance to know if anything could be done in the matter of this historic road. Hβ sug gested that a much better route could b p obtained than the one at present laid off. The Board thought this would involve compensation. In any case they would have to see Mr Inman on the subject. They had expected to see him before thie. The matter then dropped. Mr Bullock here handed in an offer for filling up the landslip on the French Farm road. Mr Williams thought it would be fairer to all to call for tenders for the work, and it was resolved to do so. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were read— From Mr G. H. Saxton, calling attention to the manner in which the main roads were being overgrown with thistles, and asking the Board to do something to mitigate the nuisance. No action was taken in the matter. From Mr J. F. Roberts, re German Bay Valley road, offering to pay half the cost of opening tip this road. Mr Roberts' offer was accepted. From Messrs Allan and Wood, Christ church, asking the Board to construct a road from the boundary of Little River road district to their property in the Little Uiver Valley. The Board agreed to do tho work as soon a« they were in funds. From the County Council, enclosing a copy of (he resolutions passed at the last meeting relative to the erection of a pound. The resolutions wore to tho effect that, if the Board wore not in funds, the Council would advance tlie necessary amount, subject to the condition of its being refunded when any money was to be allocated to the Bonrd. Mr Piper disapproved of the action of the Council in tho matter altogether. Ho would propone—That this Board decline any advance from the County Council for the erection of a pound. Mr Shadbolt seconded the motion. Mr Williams thought the Board should pause before rejecting the offer. It was not in the least likely that there would be any division of funds among the Boards. The pound would be a great public convenience, and the Board had no funds for the purpose of its erection. He would propose as an amendment—That the offer of the Council be accepted. The amendment was carried by the casting vote of the Chairman. It was resolved to invite offers for a suitable site ; in the meanwhile, the Clerk to inspect and report as to any sites avail- | able on the road reserves. From Mr A. I. McGregor, offering to prepare the valuation roll for the sum of £15. The offer was accepted. From Messrs Miles, Ilassal and Co, (telegram), agents for Mr It. Rhodes, stating that they were waiting for plan and description of the road in Rhodes , Flat, Wainui. The Clerk reported that the documents had been forwarded to the Government. He was directed to write to the Government, requesting them to forward them to the gentlemen in question. . rate. , Mr Williams proposed that the Board give the usual noticp, of their intention at next meeting to striko a rate of 9d in the £, payable on Jan. 1, 1881. PAYMENTS. The following accounts were passed for payment: — J. Duxbury, £4 19s ; J. Gunning, cleaning slip, 16s ; H. Piper, timber, £1 19s 6d ; H. Citron, stationery, lGs Gd ; J. Barwick, salary, £8 6a 8d ; J. Curry, £24 16s ; total, £41 10s Bd. Tho Board then adjourned till Nov. 24, at 10 a.m. A man in Birmingham, a catgut manufacturer, has been found guiltj of the practice of " carrying dead whales about the streets," and thereby, as the Judge ■rigorously expressed it, " stinking out the whole neighborhood.
