LITTLE RIVER.
(FROM OUR OWN COUBESrONDENT.)
It appears that after all the Pound is to be erected on the old spot near Olphert's, Mr Stanbnry having given one-tenth of an acre of lind free.
A meeting of the Stewards of the Peninsula Jockey Club was to have been held at Wascoe's on the 27th ult., to settle a protest as to tbe Publican's Purse, but in consequence of sufficient Stewards not attending the matter still remains unsettled. The race between J. Archer's and Price's horses is off. Mr Price being unable to obtain the use of tbe horse he backed.
A meeting of the Little River School Committee was held in the schoolroom on Tuesday evening, the 30th ult. Present, —Messrs P. F. Ralfe, (chairman). Allan, Coop, Walters, Johnson and Smith. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence was read from the Board of Education stating that in consequence of want of funds, tbe Board were only in a position to erect a new school at present and requesting the Committee to ask Mr Allan if he would allow the present use of the master's house until they wore in a position to erect a new one. From the same advising the Committee that a sum of £25 bad been paid into the Bank to their account. Letters were also read from Mr W. Montgomery, M. 11. It., as to new school and master's bouse, also from tbe Committee of the East Christchurch School, inviting a conference as to alterations in the Education Act as to Clauses 45. G4. 65 and 84. As to clause 65, it was resolved as a suggestion that candidates should have no power to vote at elections. Mr Allan agreed to allow the use of the master's house on the present site free. An account from Mr A. Walters was passed for payment. The Chairman was requested to write to the Board of Education requesting them to have the new school built so as to afford accomodation for 100 scholars. CagL Aschman having resigned, it was A. D.Allan j seconded by Mr ' Joseph Smith and carried unanimously, that Mr J. Olphert be elected a member of the Committee in place of Capt. Aschman resigned. The meeting then terminated. A meeting of the Cemetery Trustees UPas. held in the schoolroom. Little River, on Wednesday evening, the 31st ult. Present—Messrs W. Coop, W.Greenland, and G. W. Westropp. In the absence of Mr o>. W. Joblin. Mr Coop was elected chairman pro tern. Mr Westropp informed the meeting that he had called upon Mr Joblin with regard to the meeting, but that he was away from home. Mr Westropp produced a plan of the cemetery ground, which was generally approved, but was allowed to stand over to a full meeting. It was resolved that the cemetery ground be fenced in in accordance with plans and specification to be drawn out, and that Messrs Coop and Greenland draw up plans and specification for the work, and that tenders be culled for it at once. r lhe Treasurer (Mr Greenland) reported that he had signed cheques for the amount of J. Belcher's contract, viz., £23 10s. He also reported that he had received no bank slips for money paid into the bank, neither was be in possession of a cheque book. It was resolved that application be made to the bank for the necessary books, and that the Treasurer, in conjunction with the Chairman, procure tbe same by the next meeting. Air Coop reported that if the fence was at once erected, application could be made to the Akaroa County Coma-
cil for trees so as lo get them planted this season, which he thought advisable. It was resolvd that the next meeting be held in the schoolroom on Monday, April i 2. At a meeting of the members of the Church of England resident in the parochial district of Little River, held on tho 2nd inst., the Rev. Mr Wyatt in the chair, Mr Walters handed the following query to the Chairman :—"Has a Churchwarden the power to refuse to allow the burial service to be read at any funeral ?" 1 he. Chairman replied—Certainly not. and was glad the matter had been mentioned as. In 1 supposed some special case was referred to. If so, he would like the matter brought forward so that it could be settled that evening. Mr Walters said he referred t© the case of Mr Westropp's child. Mr Tyson had told Mr Johnson, the lay reader, that there could be no funeral service as the child had not been baptised. Now Mr Johnson had baptised the child, and he wished to know if such baptism was valid. The Chairman said that according to custom if the child was in extremis such baptism is valid for the purpose of Christian burial. Af ler a rather warm discussion the matter was allowed to drop. The Chairman stated that he had received a rather strong letter from Mr Westropp on the subject, but as he thought the matter now settled, it was unnecessary for him to read it to the meeting A meeting was held at Mr Olphert's Forsyth Arms Hotel on Saturday evening, the 3rd inst., for the purpose of arranging as to races to be held here on the 24th May next. The attendance was only moderate, and after some conversation it was rosolved that in consequence of the unavoidable absence of the Treasurer the meeting be postponed until eight o'clock on Saturday evening next. A fair amount was subscribed in the room, and with ordinary good management these races ought to be a success.
Some months ago the Akaroa County Council granted the sum of £50 to be expended on the recreation ground here. The money was handed over, a committee and a chairman appointed, yet from that time to this nothing at all has been done in the matter. I hear that a letter is going round for signature to ask the Chairman of the Recreation Ground Committee either to bring forward a statement of accounts or call a public meeting, and it is quite thus that something should be done.
