*_ [Wk are at all times ready to give expression to every shade of opinion, but in no case do we hold ourselves responsible for the sentiments of our correspondents.] COUNTY COUNCIL V. ROAD BOARD. * To the .Editor of the Akaroa Mail. Sir, —I hear it is contemplated to reduce the salaries of the Road Board Clerks. I quite agree that in some cases it is very necessary to do so. The Road Boards have not got funds coming in sufficient to pay the large salaries they have been doing ; on tbe other hand it is argued that tbe Road Board Clerks have got quite as much to do now as they ever had through having to copy the most of their work for the guidance of the County Council. lam told on good authority that the Clerk ot the County Council gets £130 for doing two days work in the week which would be at the rate of £390 a year, besides travelling expenses, &c. Now I believe there are plenty competent men about who would devote their whole time for half the latter sum, and do the greatai portion of the work now required to be done by the Road Board Clerks for the convenience of the Clerk of the County Council. By the way, Mr Editor, that ugliest of all ugly items looms out again. I mean travelling expenses for County Council members, £34 lGsGd. Really, I think that when men take a position of that sort for the honor of the thing, and on the pretence of it being for the good of their district, they should be chary n-iont receiving money which could In- employed for the yood or the public. I sue by your paper of the .'lOihinst,: that out id' £% ;U Gd there is only £3 2s | Gd P'lid lor labor, and even that item has 1 "&c," alter it. Yours, &c, RATEPAYER. 3rd April, 1880.
