COUNTY COUNCIL.

To the Editor of the Akaroa Mail

Silt, —I should like to make a few remarks upon the County Council and the Balguerie road. In the first instance the £250,1 look on it as given by the Council to Mr A rmstrong to make a road for his convenience, and not for the public good. The old road as laid out in olden times is not fit for anything, and £250 will be spent on the first half mile. That will suit Mr Armstrong, I have no doubt, but how about the Flea Bay people : they will reap no benefit by it whatever, and in my opinion the Council never thought they would. I look upon it as so much court plaster and Holloway's ointment sent to heal up Mr Armstrong's sore places. But let me assure them if they wish to see that gentleman convalescent again they must go in for compensation through Lucas', Lelievre's, and Mullins' land, and make that gentleman and the travelling public at large a road that will be a good one for all time.

I do not wonder at Mr Williams saying that it would be a disgrace to the Council. I am quite sure it will be. And the sooner that august body evaporates into smoke the better for the ratepayers, for the d a thing do they do but meet, have a yarn, adjourn for dinner and a nip, vote honorarium to their chairmen, and look out to protect their guineas. The Council chambers, as ''Old Provincial Council" says, is certainly a grand place, and I have no doubt a comfortable one, but what they wanted a building like it for beats me. There is no less than three fireplaces upstairs in one room. If tho councillors sleep there, let the ratepayers look out, for mind you, they are not common people. Wood fuel won't do them ; nothing short of black diamonds will burn in the Council grates. Mr Editor, I muse now retire, with thanks to you, and I hope the Council will receive the thanks and blessing which it richly deserves from the a hands of Mr G. A., as soon as he feels up to the business of thanking them for their generosity. Yours, &c, CONOCLAST. |
