AKAROA LICENSING COURT.
The, adjourned quarterly/meeting o| n the' Licensing Court for the /Akaroa dietrict was held yesterday, at noofl. , ; '; Present—Justin Aylmef, EsqT, R.M. (in the chair), A. C. Knight,, H! H./Fenton, and'W. B. Tosswill, Eyqs., commissioners. :. , Somerset Hotel. .'. ; . • ■/_ Constable M'Gorman reported that tbe landlord of this hotel had turned a man out drunk one night late. The Jinan was not in a fit state to walk home. He (the constable) had requested Mr Brooks to allow the man to stay inside for the mghtj but the latter had refused.' ■ 7• - '-■ Mr Brooks said he had not supplied the man with drink. Others had taken jt to him. The man was very dirty, was Saturday night, and ho did not „want to have him about his place on thb Sunday! He had always been prepared to give any-' body shelter whether he had any money or not.
The Court considered that as Mr Brooks had received the money for tho liquoiu consumed by the man referred to, he ought to have found him some place to lie in. If the weather had proved inclement and serious consequences had ensued, Mr Brooks might have found himself in "a very unpleasant position. They would advise Mr Brooks to be more careful for the future.
Criterion Hotel. Sergeant Willis reported that a respectable man at this hotel at about 10 o'clock or ffa previous evening, wanting a bed. T^B-manager had refused to lot him in. He (the sergeant) had taken the man to Rodrigues, who said he was full, and finally to Bay ley's, where he obtained accommodation.
Tho manager of the Criterion, being sent for, stated that the person knocking had not ctated that he wanted a bed, or he phould certainly have let him in. The man simply knocked, and when he asked him what he wanted, had not * answered. He concluded the Visitor simply wanted a drink
_ The Court would accept, the explanation, but at the-same time it must be distinctly understood that hotelkeeper3 were bound to supply accommodation to travellers. Olphert's Hotel. A complaint by letter had been received against thig hotel from Mr Rankin, but as the latter refused to appear in substantiation of his charge, the Court declined to take cognizance of it.- -It was stated that
