-, During the .past week an examination of | this school was held at the request of the Committee—in 'the higher classes by the i Revs W, Douglas and H. Stacker, and in the lower classes by Mr A. I. Meech, who ; expressed the pleasure he felt in receiving, the, flattering theeXTMairiers,and: also in seeing the general order > and proficiency of the school. He especially 5 referred- to the excellent papers in letter writing, which were all highly - creditable, tad in respect to a few of the first it was 'difficult to say which was the best. He was sorry: they had notrmore prizes to give, but those given should be all the more valued on that account. To the boys and girls who had been unsuccessful; he would say—try a gain. Checkley ; girls, Sarah Checkley. . Writing — Boysj, Frank Scott; girls, Sarah Checkley. Letter Writing—Ernest Watkins. Dictation—Arthur M'Gregor, 1; Ben. Penlington and G. Dalglish equal, 2. Needlework —M. Penlington, 1 ; B. Thomas, 2 ; Clara M'Donald, 3; Mary Higginson, 4. Attendance—Boys: Fred and Arthur Sims, equal, having attended/on every occasion on which the school was open during the year. Girls: Emily Vangioni. : Good conduct — Boys: E. Watkins. Girls : E. Haylock. This was decided by the votes ef the whole school by ballot, Mr Nicholls acting as returning officer, who declared the result as above. The prizes for singing were left overi the Committee not being able to give prizes. Mr Meech, after the distribution of the prizes, intimated that there would be four weeks holidays during-Christmas, and that the school would again resume on Monday, 12th January next. * 7* f i After giving three hearty cheers for the teachers, for the examiners, and for Mr Meech. and the Committee, the children sang $' God Save the Queen," and then separated.
