AKAROA AND WAINUI ROAD BOARD.

Thfj usual fortnightly meeting of this Board was held on the above date, at their offices, Duvauchelle's Bay. Present—Meesrs Chappell (in the chair), M'Donald, and Shadbolt. 'The minutes of the previous meeting were read and ponfirmed. INTERVIEWS. Mr M'Phail waited wpon the Board, and produced a letter from Mr Barrett, a tenant of Mr Rhodes, forbidding him to interfere with his fence or go on his land. Mr M'Donald thought the Board could take the work off Mr M'Phail's hands as soon as completed, with the exception of the bridge. He moved a resolution to that effect, which was carried. Mr T. S. Johnson reported that a land slip had come down on the main road at Robinson's Bay. He asked permission to shift it, which was granted. Mr Johnson also had a grievance about an account of his, including an item for a sledge. It was agreed that the items should be referred to Mr Duxbury. Mr P. David was in attendance in regard to the vexed question of the Horseshoe Bend contract. Mr David could not see on what grounds the Board withheld the deposit. He gave the Board formal notice that, if not paid, he would sue for it. Mr J. Mander applied for a settlement of the contract for the Purple Peak road. _ Hβ was informed that tie Board's decision would be communicated to him by letter.

Mr R. Vanstone applied for a few chains of road leading to his property on the Barry's Bay Valley road. The Clerk was instructed to prepare a specification and estimate .of the work asked for.

Mr Kenny attended to ask what the Board intended to do about his Wainui contract. It had been over three months completed now.

The Chairman said that Mr Fenton had sent in no certificate on the matter.

Mr Kenny: "No, nor never will." A letter was read from Mr TTenton on the subject, stating that he would prefer having nothing more to do with the work, but that he had never absolutely refused to have any ; more to do with it. He certainly was tited of Mr Kenny, but if the Board insisted, he would still carry on with him.

From the same, declining to spend any money on the proposed culvert in Bed John's Gully/on the ground of the " present uncertainty as to which district the said culvert is situated."

From W. Montgomery, Esq, M.H.R., stating that he had interviewed the Premier on the subject of the £100,000 due to Boad Boards. The Premier had informed him that until receipt of the £5,000,000 loan the Government would not have funds to pay any portion of the money.

_ From Mr G. H. Sadler, asking permission to cut grass on the new. German Bay road.

Mr M'Donald proposed that tenders be invited for permission to cut the grass on the roads.

, From Mr E. Lelievre, complaining that the Board's contractors, Messrs Brown and Raven, were trespassing on his land. Mr Duxbury was directed to visit and report on the matter.

From Mr H. Slater, on behalf of Mr Birch, trustee in Maltby's estate, asking if any money was due to the latter by the Board that it might be paid to the trustee. The Clerk had already answered the letter. • From the Secretary to the Race Committee, asking permission to erect. stalls on the road. Permission granted. _ From the Chief Surveyor, enclosing certified plan of the Duvauchelle's Bay road. From Mr A. I. M'Gregor. offering to undertake the duties of valuer for the district for £25. The offer was accepted, and Mr M'Gregor appointed. PURPLE PEAK KOAD. It was resolved that a second progress payment of £10 be made on J. Manders' contract for this road, and that no more be paid unless the work were finished according to specilication. ELECTION OF MEMBERS. Mr M'Donald proposed that there should be three polling booths for the coming election, viz., at Wainui, Duvauchelle's Bay, and Akaroa. Mr Shadbolt opposed the proposition which he considered quite uncalled for. The Chairman supported the motion, which was carried. PAYMENTS. The following accounts were passed for payment:— W.
