A special meeting of the Akaroa Borough Council was held on Friday evening for the purpose of considering a letter from Messrs.Edmiston Brothers, the Council's agents, re letting the Ashburton Reserves. It was considered necessary to furnish the firm in question with a reserve price, (N.B. —No joke intended.) The Council determined to telegraph to the auctioners, asking their opinion on the matter, and adjourned till the next evening. On Saturday evening there was no quorum present, but as a reply had been received from Messrs Edmiston, we believe that his Worship the Mayor took the necessary action in the matter. For obvious reasons, we do not give publicity to the
price fixed upon,
Here is a " frightful example " for the " Stop my paper " gentlemen, and, as the Professor would remark, " the worst of it t's true." The Hon. W. S. Peters, ofMount Somers, in a fit of indignation stopped his subscription to the Ashburton Mail during the late general election. The Mail has been amply revenged, for a horse belonging to that hon. gentlemen, worth £40, has just been sold at the Ashburton pound for £18, the pound notices Which appeared in the Mail having failed to find their way to Peters' home station. Mr Peters has saved about a guinea a year, at the cost of losing his horse as well as his newspaper. Penny wise and pound foolish "
