THE PURAU ROAD.
To the Editor of the Akaroa Mail
Sib,— Having frequently travelled the Purau road from Akaroa, I must fully en■dorse your remarks with regard to the present dangerous state of the track. This is the emergency route to Lyttelton, which can be reached even in the present state of things in Bix hours. There is therefore every reason why the road should at any '■ rate be kept in tolerable repair, by the various Road . Boards through whose •districts It passes. Approaching the Head of the Bayfrom the turn off to Port Levy, the rise to the monument is very abrupt,
and could easily be improved upon. The track also at this point is very narrow and ■dangerous. A few miles further on there are the remains of two culverts, which are very unsafe to cross. At the entrance to the.last bush, when approaching Pigeon Bay, the road is simply a staircase formation, and it is with difficulty that a horse can be made to traverse this place. It is to be hoped that the "powers that be" will see the necessity of the Purau line a little more passable than it is at present; a small sum of money, judiciously expended, would produce the desired effect.—l am, &c, H. S. B.
