AKAROA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
*— —— Wednesday, Feb. 6. . Present—His Worship the Mayor, Crs Waeckerle, Penlingten, Billens r Sunckell, Meech, Cullen, O'Reilly, Wagstaff, and Annand. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. , CORRESPONDENCE. From Mr McGregor, resigning his office of Town Clerk. From the same applying for the office of: Town Clerk td the Akaroa Borough Council. From Mr J. Andrews, applying for the same appointment. From ,, Mr G. Black, supporting Mr Andrews' application. Cr O'Reiliy, moved the acceptance of the Town Clerk's resignation, and the adoption of his application for a fresh appointment to the same office. Cr Meech seconded the motion, and said that he felt, with others, that Mr McGregor was the right man in the right place, as had been shewn by his ability in carrying out the duties connected with the office. The motion was carried nem con. From Mr R. Noonan, Fire Inspector, suggesting that an engine would be of more service that a hook and ladder brigade.' Cr Penlington moved that the subject be allowed to stand over for the present. Cr O'Reilly wanted to know what had been done in the matter of the fire brigade in Akaroa. He understood that a sum of money was lying to the credit of the brigade, and, as far as he could see, nothing was being done. , Cr Penlington moved that the consideration of this matter be deferred. The Poundkeeper's report was then read, shewing receipts for the month of January to the amount of 14s. The following report of the Works Committee was then submitted to the meeting : Report of the Works Committee, at a meeting held 6th February, 1878. Present—Messrs Meech (chairman), Waeckerle, O'Reilly, and Sunkell. " The Committee recommend that the material on hand be used for the bridge at Higgins', and that the Council call for tenders for the same for labor only "The Committee recommend that the abutments should be firmly secured with 6 inch spikes. "The Committee have ordered the footway side of the Catholic Church to be filled up with gravel, at a cost of 12s. The work was necessary, is well done, and the charge is reasonable. "The Committee beg to intimate to the Council, that the bridge over the creek at Mr Meech's is in such a state that persons using this bridge with heavy traffic complain that it is unsafe, and the Committee earnestly request the Council's early atten- ! tion to the subject. " The Committee recommend that all culverts be opened, and that Cr Wagstaff's attention be again drawn to the Council's \ letter of 6th October, in regard to the drain from his property." Cr O'Reilly, as a member of the Works Committee, said, they had examined the bridge in question, and had - found the girders all rottfen, arid that it was not worth repairing. Cr Waeckehle stated that tho matter was under consideration in the Road Board some time ago, and that it was only the formation of the Borough Council which prevented : the necessary repairs being carried out long since. Cr Wagstaff moved that the report be adopted. Seconded by Cr Penlington, and carried. PAYMENTS. - H. Citron £1 4 3 J. Allott ... ... 1 10 0 W. Maltby 0 12 0 E. Leprou 1 18 0 On the motion of Cr Meech, seconded by Cr Sunckell, the above accounts were passed for payment. The Trustees of the Akaroa Library wish to know whether the Council will take over tho Library, in terms of clause 4 of the Akaroa Library's Act. It was proposed by Cr Penlington, seconded by Cri' Sunckell—" That the question stand ovsr as there was a hitch about the land, and it would be better to hear first from thQTrustees." Cr Annand thoiight if the Trustees were prepared to haiiil over the deeds the Council should write, accepting the offer, provided that the deeds were handed over. Cr O'IiKiLLY proposed that. His Worship the Mayor and Ci Meech be appointed to see Mr Nalder, and get the Clerk's bond properly drawn up. Seconded by Cr Suiickeli and carried. Cr Annand's nqtice of motion—" That the boundaries of \he Borough be allered. so as to include al} that part of the foreshore from the town boundary at the domain to the northern branch of the mill stream " was then put to the Council.
Cr Annand explained that at the present time shingle was: taken by people for private purposes. This shingle would, in the case of his motion being adopted, belong to the Council, and be of great use for road works, > poreover, the wharves would soon be handed over to the Council. Cr Penlington agreed with Cr Aniiand, and seconded the motion, which was carried. .
Cr Wagstaff'snotice of motion—"That the wharves within the Borough be taken over by the Council in terms oi! the Marine Amendment Act, 1867." After some discussion, Cr Annand proposed as an amendment that a Sub-com-mittee be appointed, consisting of his Worship the Mayor, Crs O'Eeilly, Wagstaff, and the mover, to enquire into the question of the wharves, and report at the next meeting , . The amendment was carried. Cr Meech gave notice of motion to enlarge the boundaries of the Borough. The Council then adjourned.
