AKAROA LIBRARY COMMITTEE.

Present — Messrs Sims (chairman pro tern), Penlington, Harris, Hemingway, and Searbrough.

The minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed, the report of the Sub-committee in regard to their interview with the Trustees (tin , . Rev. W. Aylmer and Mr S. Watkins). which was somewhat unsatisfactory, the result not being what the.Committee anticipated, was then submitted to the meeting.

Messrs O'Brien and Whitfield represented the Oddfellows at the meeting of the Subcommittee.

Some considerable discussion ensued, the general opinion of the Committee being that"they were not liable; for the acts of the Trustees, who had placed the building On land which was not their own. Mr Penlington did not see why the Library should be put to expense in the matter. Mr Watkins had sanctioned the ■alteration of the sections, and was aware of the Bill, which had been read a second time. Moreover, the Library deed of conveyance had been registered some days before the Oddfellows' deed. He considered the Trustees were acting in opposition. He would propose—" That the Library be fenced in according to the description contained in the schedule of the Akaroa Library's Act, 1877, and that the persons having land bounding the Library section be given notice that the Library Committee intend to fence, and asking them to bear their share of the saniei" The motion was seconded by Mr Harris, and carried. It was resolved that the present Trustees be written to, requesting them to hand over the Trust to the Borough Council in terms of clause 4 of the Akaroa Public Library's Act, 1877 ; and, further, that the reference room be open on Sundays. the Treasurer stated that the present liabilities of the Committee amounted io £20, and that the funds in hand were £3 15s. The meeting then adjourned. ■
