Advices from Constantinople state that a great battle was fought on the 14th. near Phillipolis, and that fighting was re-commenced on the following morning. The inhabitants have been -ordered to leave the city, and also to leave Tehipian. Kaffir prospects are more cheering. A large quantity of colonial wool is declared for sale at auction, to take place on the 19th February. Jan. 17. England has informed Russia and "Turkey that whilst admitting an armistice, they refuse to recognise a separate treaty of peace, and will withhold their .assent to anything which may be contrary to the treaty of Paris. Frequent meetings continue to be held in London in favour of neutrality. Jan. 18. Lord Beaconsfield's recent speech says, if British interests are threatened, lie would not hesitate to defend them. Lord Salisbury has declared against -war until such time as the Russians approached localities which are defined as affecting British interests. This is approved of by Mr Gladstone's party. Jan. 19. Russian loss in capturing Shipka Pass amounted to 5464. Russian forces have occupied Phillipolis, and are marching on Adrianople. Suspension of hostilities throughout Bulgaria has been agreed to.
