AKAROA AND WAINUI ROAD BOARD.

Present —Messrs Piper (chairman), Williams, Sliadbolt, Diixbury.,l Mr Moore Morgan was present for the purpose'of signing a conveyance in connection with the sale of that portion of his 'and through which the Long Bay road diversion passes. ... Messrs Whith'eld and J. Noonan waited on the Board for the purpose of laying before them a petition from several owners anil occupiers'of land on the Main Okain's Biiy road, in which attention was drawn to the dangerous condition of the lower par! of the said road,, find ; reminding the Board that a-good road had been laid off ■'■aijd throiigli Mr Piper's paddock, o£ 'which the upper part was finished, abut;: v£ no use unless the lower part is made so as to join the main road. Whitfield dwelt at some length on the necessity for the work, as being the main road to a large and important district, and hoped the Board would give the matter their* early attention.

The Board assured the deputation that ttiey' fully recognised the importance of the work, and that it should receive their immediate consideration. CORRESPONDENCE. From Mr Moore Morgan, saying- he had every reason to believs that the Board are trespassing on his land in parts of the road now being formed in the Grehan Valley, leading to Mr Worsley's property, and suggesting that the Board keep the right line of road to save further trouble. The Board informed Mr Morgan, who was present, that Mr Worsley was making the road on his own responsibility, and unauthorised by them, so that they had nothing to do with the matter.

From the Public Works Department, Wellington, enclosing a copy of the Public Works Amendment Bill now before Parliament.

From the Treasury, Wellington, transmitting a duplicate of Treasury voucher, which! together with a cheque for the amount thereof, had been posted to the manager of tho Bank of New Zealand, Akaroa, for the credit of the District Public Account, viz., half the subsidies of 10s in the £, payable out of the Consolidated and Land' Funds, and amounting to £166 15s 4d.

Telegrams were received from the Treasury, requesting a statement of the assets and liabilities at 30th June, previously asked for in the circular of 4th June. It was resolved that the information be given at once. From T. Gordon, enclosing a list of all sections purchased during the year 1877, and charging half a guinea for the same. From A. C. Knight, Esq., offering to give his private road in exchange for the old road so far as it runs through his land, and the road marked on the map as forming the southerly boundary of his section lO«G. Any difference in the acreage to be paid for by the Board or himself, at the rate of £10 per acre, as the case may be, and, in case the exchange is made, requesting tho right to use a quarry on the new road for one year, engaging not to injure or stop up the road in so doing. Mr Duxbnry proposed, seconded by Mr Sliadbolt, and carried—" That the Minister of Public works be communicated with at once, urging the necessity of an immediate settlement of all liabilities incurred by the late Provincial Government in the re-formation of the several roads within this ro -d district, namely, the Wainui main road diversion, through Mr Knight's property ; the German Bay main road diversion, through Mr St. John's ; and the Okain's Bay main road diversion through Mr Piper's ; as the Akaroa and Wainui Road Board find themselves incompetent to deal with these matters, having no data .or-particulars which are necessary before a settlement can be made, and would urge the advisability of a special commissioner being appointed to settle these questions." The Clerk was instructed to write to Mr Knight, to the effect that the Board had deferred the consideration of his letter until the Government had replied concern ing the settlement of outstanding Provincial liabilities. From 11. Wagstaff, binding himself to provide half the cost of the track round the Cemetery Point. The clerk stated that the track had been formed at a cost of £6. The Board gave instructions that Mr "Wagstaffs offer be accepted and that written application be made to him for half the cost. From James Gillespie, drawing attention to the bad condition of Haines'tiack. The clerk received instructions to inspect the locality and put the work in hand forthwith, also to visit tho Summit road between Little Akaloa and the now Pigeon Bay road. From the Engineer, enclosing estimate of forming the new road from the Red House Gully to the native settlement for £50. .The Board agreed to the terms. Mr Williams proposed, seconded by Mr Shadbolt, and carried, that the roads up the ■Oatsin luivauchelle's and Robinson's Bays be formed and the culverts renovated.

The clerk was instructed to call tenders for the -work, also for forming the road through Mr Coll McDonald's property at Wainui, also for metalling the Barry's Bay and Pigeon Bay junction roads, also for metalling a portion of the French Farm and Barry's Bay road, aiid to write to E. C. Latter Esq., chairman of the County Council re special grants. TKNDER.S. Old Pigeon Bay Road.— Stewart and Vai'jioni, per chain £1 12s —£230 8s; time, thiee months. W. Mr Williams moved, that Eve rail and Gunning's tender be accepted. Seconded by Mr Shad bolt, and carried. Le Bon's Bay Boad.—W. Kenny, £1 12s Gd per chain—£32 19s ; time, one month. Vanjioni. £1 4s 6d per chain— £24 10s ; timo, three weeks. Cairns and Gundy, £1 10s per chain—£3o ; time, one month. T. S. Johnson, £14 ; time, one month. W.
