In consequence of the local interest attaching to the case, 0. Bates v. L. Porham, heard at the Resident Magistrates Court, Akaroa, on Friday the 16th inst. we have held over our report of the proceedings till Friday's issue, when we. purpose publishing the case in full, together with a supplement. In a former issue, we drew attention to the state in which one of the approaches to the Domain grounds had been left by the contractor, when widening the cemetery road. At the meeting of the Board, held on Saturday, Nov. 3rd, the clerk was instructed to see that this approach was reformed, but as yet nothing has been done in the matter. Perhaps the authorities will inform the public why not ? The Rev. P. 0. Anderson gave notice in St. Peter's Church last Sunday that, after the end of this year, the new version of Hymns Ancient and Modern would be considered as the Hymnal in use in that Church, the okbedition being out of print, and that, therefore; in giving out the numbers of the. Hyinris, the numbers of the new edition only would be stated. In order to avoid confusion, we recom.nend members of the congregation to. supply, themselves with the new version;

The necessity for increased postal service to the Bays, which was advocated in the subleader of a recent issue of this journal, is a matter of such public importance, that we hope no delay will -take place in its-bsing taken up both by the inhabitants of the-, districts interested, and > by the people of the Peninsula, generally. , As yet, we have heard of no'>stops,having been taken to ward a getting up a petition to the postal authorities, but we trust that the leading men in the Bays will immediately take the initiative, and vigorously push the matter forward with a view to an early attainment of this much to be desired amendment of, the present mail accommodation. Elsewhere will be found an advertisement calling for tenders for the erection of a side school at Pigeon Bay, also one giving notice of a meeting to be held for the purpose of electing a member to serve on the German Bay School Committee. There must have been some heavy wagering, in Melbourne, over the late Spring Meeting, as we observe that on settling day there, Mr J. Thompson, the well known bookmaker, paid away £21,000 in four bets, £10,000 of that sum being paid to the owner of the horse that won the Melbourne Cup. Landed property in the immediate vicinity of Christchuroh must have considerably decreased in value of late, if we are to judge by a paragraph in the Lyttclton Times of yesterday, which states that Messrs Matson & Co. sold some land, at the back of Mr Norman's, Papanui, in one acre sections, the price realised being £1 per section. The Little River Cemetery Exchange Bill passed the third reading, in the House of Representatives, on the evening of the 14th Inst.

The secretary to the Regatta Committee requests us to acknowledge the receipt of a donation of one guinea towards the regatta funds from Messrs Ileyniansoli, Low, and Co., Dimedin.

We have to draw attention to Messrs Bridge and BushelPs sale of cattle, horsey, &c, at the Head of the Bay on Thursday next, also to their sale of the Akaroa mill and brewery on Friday, the 2;3rd inst.

A meeting of! Committee of the Pastoral Association was held .at the Somerset Hotel, Head of the Bay, yesterday afternoon.. The members present were:—Messrs J. Hay (in the chair), W. MaseHcld, L; Libeau, B. Shadbolt, 11. Piper, S. Lee. and J. McKay. Mr Tlay took the opportunity of the first occasion on which he occupied the chair to thank the members for', electing him as President, and hoped he would satisfactorily fill the post-so ably held by the late Mr Buchanan. Mr McKay suggested that all old members, and those who had given special prizes last year should be written to requesting a continuance of their support. Mr Hay was empowered to make arrangements with Captain McLean, of the s.s. Akaroa, to run to Pigeon Bay from Lyttelton on the day of the show. It was agreed that entries should close on the 20lh prox., and that the next committee meeting be held on the , 10th.

We have been requested to remind our readers of the opening cricket match to be played at German Bay next Saturday,, the 24th inst. Should the weather be suitable, we trust a good match may result, and inaugurate a successful season. " All players arc invited to take part in the game. Bees have peculiar ideas as to the most suitable places in which to take up their abode, as was recently found out in the dwelling part of Messrs Garwood and Cos. premises, where a swarm took up their quarters in one of the chimney Hues. Twice were they driven away by smoking, only to return in increased numbers, much to the annoyance and discomfort of Mr Perm and his family. However, by the aid of green wood and sulphur, Mr Perm hopes that his third attempt to dislodge his unwelcome visitors will be permanently successful. Mr Stratton resumed his duties -here as Postmaster &c, yesterday, and Mr Jaggar, who has been relieving him during ■ his absence, returns to Christchurch tomorrow. The manner in which Mr Jaggar has conducted tlie office during his temporary "charge, cannot fail to, have won universal commendation, and we feel sure we are but reiterating the.feelings of the public generally in wishing him prosperity and success wherever he may be. At the same time, v/ 3 take this opportunity of congratulating Mr Stratton on the recovery of his health, and da his resuming his official position.' ,
