LYTTELTON REGATTA.
TO THE EDITOR OP THE AKAROA MAIL. Sib, —I notice the Lyttelton Regatta Committee have advertised their programme for 1878, and whilst admitting it is a most liberal one. there is one feature in it which I think is certainly very pointed, —that is, in the Champion Tacht Race, they have excluded yachts under six tons from competing. Now, as five ton yachts are the only size owned here, it throws them out of the race. Is it because a boat of that tonnage has beaten the Lyttelton yachts, or what is the reason ? Anyhow. to me it does not savour of that spirit of fair play so generally acknowledged amongst boating men. If large yachts cannot afford to give fifteen seconds to the ton allowance to small yachts-, they certainly are not worthy the name:. I may say in conclusion, that in Adelaide and Sydney the allowance is 60 seconds, and no limit as to the size of vessels running. Hoping the committee will see their way. clear to allow a yacht of any size paying her entrance fee, and sailing a fair race, to compete, I remain, yours, &c, A FIVE TONNER.
