Melbourne, August 29. Arrived—Albion. Sailed—Tararua. (Per s.s. City of Sydney via Auckland.) Sydney, August 24. A great destruction of property occured at Wallend, Newcastle; owing to the falling in of a coal pit. A "Wesley an Chapel disappeared, Walkin's Hotel settled down, and the streets are full of great openings. Considerable alarm prevailed in the districts. . All business places at Gulgong were closed for a day of humiliation and prayer for rain.
