CABLE TELEGRAMS.

(Per Press Agency.) AUSTRALIA.

Sydney, April 10.

The schooner S. M. Watson, from Newcastle to San Francisco, sprang a leak off Cape Howe, and bore up for Howe's Island, where she was beached. The captain, wife, and crew, were safely landed. Three of the crew took the boat and provisions, and sailed for Sydney, arriving on Sunday. The weather is fine. The Exhibition was bpened at noon by the Governor with brief formality. The members of the Government, the Corporation, the leading

citizens, and a large concourse, of people were present. Owing to the live stock show being deferred till April 17, and extensive machinery being in an unprepared state, the Exhibition presents an unfinished appearance outside. The Canadian and American Courts are not yet ready, but the main building is in order and presented an interesting spectacle. The pastoral, mining, and agricultural industries were well represented, the fine arts poorly, and the sections allotted to minor industries were well filled. Mr. W. H. Watt, of Wanganui, was highly commended for his exhibits of wool. Two other exhibits of wool, in a different class, by the same gentleman, were also highly commended. London, April 8. A Cabinet Council was held at Stambouf on Saturday and Sundaj*, to consider the invitation of the Powers in reference to the Protocol. The decision is awaited with uneasiness. It is rumoured that the Porte has resolved to negotiate with Russia.
