Te Patui, charged with the murder of Morgan, was found guilty, and sentenced to death. The principal point relied on for the defence was, that Morgan cursed Te Patui, and gave provocation, but the judge directed that the jury were bound strictly by English law and not by Maori customs. April 10. Gordon, at the Supreme Court for indecent assault on a girl aged 12 years, was sentenced to three years' imprisonment. The prisoner was a married man, and previously bore a respectable character. John Pyke, charged by the husband of Mrs. McDonald with stealing certain goods, the property of his wife, was acquitted. The case was peculiar. M'Donald was married in Sydney, and his wife left him. Subsequently she obtained his forgiveness, and they lived together at the Thames. She again left him, taking with her some goods, and a married man named Pyke, who assisted her to remove the goods, with which he supplied himself. Tlie question for the jury was, whether all the wife's property being the property of her husband, Pyke was guilty of larceny in assisting to remove the goods. Welllington, April 10. Tenders for the extension of the Queen's wharf are advertised for. The plans have been submitted to se% r eral engineers and approved. The tenders are for widening the main wharf and the extension of the T's. The work will cost fully £20,000. Mrs. Scott-Siddons last night concluded the most successful season in every respect ever played here She and Mr. Steele leave for Christchurch to-morrow. The Davenports also closed their series of wellattended performances last night. They leave for Napier. The Lydia Howarde troupe will perform for the next few nights, at the Theatre Royal. Charles Hillsden, custodian for the Theatre Company, and business manager for the lessees has brought a criminal action for libel against a person named Powell, formerly connected with the theatre, for having written an anonj-mous letter to one of the Public Hall directors, in which he insinuated that the directors of the company and lessees of the theatre were being defrauded by Hillsden. The case was heard before the Resident Magistrate, and Powell, who reserved his defence, was committed to take his trial at the next Criminal Sittings of the Supreme Court. April 11. A telegram has been received here from Greymouth stating that George Jackson is prepared to scull Heam, or to find a man in the Grey Valley to do so, for the sum of from £50 to £250, and asking if a match can be made. A reply has been telegraphed that Hearn is prepared to row Jackson for £250, allowing him £25 for expenses to come to Wellington to row the match. Dunedin, April 10. Dr. Scott, M.8.C.M., Edinburgh University 1874, and at present demonstrator of Anatomy at that University, has been appointed Professor of Anatomy for Otago University. The session of the Otago Institute is postponed till June, as the Museum lecture room is not ready. The railway line is about to be continued from Balclutha bridge up to the township. It is reported that Sir F. D. Bell is about to be made a member of the Upper House. The Bruce County Council has decided to adopt the Counties Act in its entirety. April 11. The Directors of the Union Company have suspended Captain Andrew for three months on mate's pay, and Captain Griffiths, of the Beautiful Star, has assumed command of the Taranaki.
