LITTLE RIVER ROAD BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting of this Board was held at the office Kaituna, on Monday, the sth inst. All the members being present. Letters were received from the surveyor to the Halswell lload Board, requesting the co-operation of this board in necessary repairs to the boundary bridge at the Tai Tapu. From the same, asking the concurrence of the board to jointly advertise for tenders for clearing the HalsAvell river for a term of three years, from the 3rd of March next. From nine residents at the Little River, urging upon the Board the necessity of making some improvement to the road in Port Levy valley. From the Colonial Treasurer, enclosing cheque for the sum of £48 2s 6d. With reference to the boundary bridge, the Clerk reported that he had met the surveyor by appointment, and had decided upon the necessary work, each board to pay half cost. The report was confirmed. As to clearing the Halswell river, the Clerk was instructed to point out to the Chairman of the Halswell Board the boundary of the Selwyn Connty, as defined in the first schedule of the " Counties Act." The Little Iliver district never yet having benefited by the clearing of the Halswell river, inasmuch that between four and five miles at the lower end, which wouldreally confer some benefit, is never touched. Upon consideration of the letter from residents at Little River re the Port Levy valley road, the Clerk was ordered to report upon it at next meeting, and ascertain in the meantime how much money the parties interested would be inclined to subscribe towards the necessary work. It was resolved to have a groin placed above the tipper bridge at Little River, and the Clerk was ordered to have the work done as soon as possible. It having been represented as desirable that the main Christchurch and Akaroa road, including the saddles between Ahuriri and Gebbie's Flat, be diverted round the points by the Halswell river, as having the advantage of being level the whole distance, and plenty of stone at hand for metalling, it was resolved that Messrs. Gebbie, Murray, Parkinson, and the Clerk, meet in that neighborhood on the 26th inst., for the purpose of inspectieg the proposed deviation, and report at next meeting. There having been complaints from time to time made with reference to the nuisance caused by the refuse from the sawmills at Little River, the Board concluded that the matter could be no longer overlooked, and instructed the Clerk to serve the proprietors with notice to abate the nuisance caused by the sawdust, and request them to take measures to prevent the said sawdust and other impurities from polluting the streams in the neighborhood. Tenders were received and accepted for breaking and stacking 2000 cubic yards of metal; also, filling up holes near the Beach Hotel. Sundry payments were made, and the Board adjourned.
