AKAROA AND WAINUI ROAD BOARD.
A meeting of the above Board was held at the Board's office, yesterday afternoon. Present—Messrs. Piper, (chairman), Duxbury, Lelievre and Shadbolt. CORRESPONDENCE. From Mr. Eolleston, forwarding copy of letter from the District Engineer, Akaroa, and stating that special vote for the Pigeon Bay road was paid over to Board for special purpose of meeting engagements of the contract ; also, requesting to be informed on what grounds the Board declined to honour the Engineer's certificate in the matter of T. S. Johnston's contract. Mr. Shadbolt moved—" That the Board do not consider itself liable to pay for any works put in hand by Mr. Fsnton without first subjecting them for approval of the Board, and that the unfinished portion of the Pigeon Bay road will require all the funds now in hand to complete." From the Provincial Auditor's Office, Christehurch, requesting the books, vouchers, and accounts of board to be submitted for audit on Friday, the 16th February. From Henry Wagstaff, calling the Board's attention to the state of the road at the foot of the new German Bay road, and requesting that something may be done to make it accessible. The Clerk was instructed to cause the necessary repairs to be effected. From G. Armstrong, intimating his intention of objecting to the Board levying rates on 2228 acres of land, bought by him, but not yet surveyed, on the ground of his not having the exclusive occupation of the land through non-survey. The collector was instructed to sue for all outstanding rates. From several residents, Wainui district, drawing the Board's attention to the necessity for the construction of a bridge across the creek, near Mr. Bates, on the Wainui Valley road. Mr. Duxbury moved—" That Mr Adams be requested to visit the locality, and report upon the probable cost." From B. Shadbolt, asking whether it is the Board's intention to carry out agreement with him re section for Road Board purposes, Head of Bay, the house having been kept vacant for the past three months. During the consideration of this letter Mr. Shadbolt retired, when it was resolved on the motion of Mr. Lelievre —" That a sub-committee, consisting of Messrs. Piper, Duxbury, and the mover visit the property, and report upon it at next meeting of the Board." From H. Slater, objecting to the imposition of rate for mill at Onuka, for the time he was engaged removing and reerecting it. Mr. Shadbolt moved—" That the rate be remitted, as the property was not in the occupation of Mr. Slater when the rate was levied." From Austin and Kirk, Christehurch, submitting quotations for drain pipes. From Duncan Kennedy, Wainui, asking for the construction of a road up the jetty as far as his section, No. 5,218. Mr. Duxbuey moved—" That Mr. Adams be instructed to prepare plans and specifications and invite tenders, providing Mr. Kennedy agrees to pay one-half its cost." From the Treasury, Wellington, requesting returns of the value of the rateable property, forming part of the sum of £10,142 shown in last returns, now comprised in the Borough of Akaroa; also, asking information as to what portion the sum of £321 10s. 7d. collected on account of general rates was received in respect of such property, as it appears that the Borough is entitled to participate in the grant payable computed on s.l2ths of the collections of the Akaroa and Wainui Board from property now under the jurisdiction of the Borough. TENDERS. Breast Wall, Barry's Bay Valley Road.— Sigley and Dickson, £195; Sigley and Dickson, dry rubble, £150. Both tenders being considered excessive were declined, and the Clerk was instructed to invite fresh tenders. Metalling Jetty Road, Head of Bay. — Gunning and Co., 2s 3d per yard, and 15s per 100 feet for culverts ; T. Johnston
per yard, 2s 3d ; per culvert, £3 17s. 6d ; John Lines, per yard, Is lid ; per culvert, £3 17s. The tender of Lins being the lowest, was accepted. Protective Work, Robinson's Bay. — J. Vangioni, £200; Sigley and Dickson, £95 ; T. Johnston, £18 per chain, including extra culvert; Gunning and Co., £4 per chain. Mr. Shadbolt proposed that the tender of Gunning and Co., be accepted, remarking that it appeared excessive. After a little comment on the extraordinary disparity between the amount of the several tenders, the motion was seconded and carried. The highest was £200, and the lowest £28. NEW WORKS. Mr. Duxbury moved—" That specifications be prepared, and tenders invited for the metalling of the main road from Mr. St. John's gate to the junction with the metal below." The motion was seconded by Mr. Lelievre and carried. The Clerk was instructed to put Mr. Feltham's road in repair at once. PAYMENTS.
