ADVENT OF NEW YEAR'S DAY.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE AKAROA MAIL. Sir, —We wish to make known the kind of reception we received at the hands of a few of the residents of Pigeon Bay on New Year's morning. A few of us decided to go round and exchange compliments with them. Some of whom seemed quite pleased, and treated us most hospitably, while others grumbled a little at being disturbed. At one house we wished the inmates a " Happy New Year." They did not open the door, our party kept on playing the music, but we could plainly hear them walking about inside. We expected every minute to hear the door open. To our great surprise we heard a cap snap. One of our company said that he heard the gun being loaded, and, as Josh Billings says, we then thought it was time to make ourselves scarce- We had only gone but a short distance when a shot was fired at us. We write this to warn persons desirous of exchanging compliments with the occupants of Blue Gum Cottage, to give the same a wide berth, or they may receive a rather warm reception.—We are, &c, First Footers. Pigeon Bay, Jan. 2, 1877.
