Sailed—New Zealand Company's ship Mataura, for London. Cargo valued at £100,000. Grahamstown, January 11. At a conference of Borough and County Councils last nignt, a resolution was passed affirming the desirability of Borough and County amalgamation. Dunedin,' January 11. At a meeting of Presbyterians held yesterday, a very acrimonious discussion took place on the state of religion. The following is the final selection of Otago team : —Messrs. Bounce, Cargill, Clarke, Millington, Morris, Nicholls, Paramour, Reade, Rose, and Rhodes. The team will meet this afternoon to elect their captain. Messrs. Millington ■ and Nicholls will go to Christchurch direct from Oamaru, and the rest of the team will leave per Taranaki on Friday. A serious accident occurred this morning near the Southern Centre, where excavations are being carried on by teams of prison labour. There were about 35 present, and a shot was put in at the top of a cliff about fifty 'feet high. The men were then removed to a distance of a hundred yards. , One shaft going, 1500 tons of earth were displaced, fragments being scattered through the air in all directions. Part of the shower fell upon a group of prisoners and labourers, knocking four of them down. One prisoner had his leg broken, another was rendered insensible from a severe wound on the back of his head, and the other two were much injured. Another accident occurred at the same place during the afternoon, by which a prisoner had the flesh stripped off the bone of his leg for several inches. [By Submarine-Cable.] Sydney, January 11. Sailed —Wakatipu. London, January 9. At meeting of Conference on Monday, Lord Salisbury refused to admit arguments. Turkish delegates, who were equally persistent in rejecting condition, proposed by representatives of EurojDean powers, and entered into debate on question of guarantees, especially with reference to proposed International commission.
