NATIONAL DISTINCTIONS.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE AICAUOA MAIL. Sir, —If there is one thing more than another that a true Britisher holds in abhorrence, it is national distinctions, and I was rather grieved on reading your report of the case Clements v. Beecher, wherein the defendant is reported to have displayed exceedingly bad taste towards a race of people who have preserved their national customs from early ages amidst the greatest of trials. Why make the distinction Jacob the Jew ? Is it customary to designate Tom Jones, the Englishman, Pat Sweeny, the Irishman, Donald M'Lochlan, the Scotchman ? Itrust to see all New Zealanders, without regard to colour, creed, or nationality, standing side by side, assisting to build up a united and happy nation. Fortunately the days of the Inquisition and Jewish Disabilities have passed away, let me hope for ever into the irrecallable time.

Yours, &c, NEW ZEALANDER.
