Borough Council.
The ordinary meeting of the Alex* andra Borough Council was held on Monday evening sth inst., when there were present—ffis Worship the Mayor (Mr Gee. Spencer), Crs Schaumann, Laidlaw, Ryan, M'Gregor, Buchanan, and M'Knight. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The outward correspondence was read and approved. The town clerk read the water byelaws, as revised, and it was resolved that a special meeting be held on the 13th inst to deal with the same. The inward correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: — Mr L. Byan wrote, on behalf of Mr D. Gunn, of Chatto Creek, asking permission to connect with the Borough water-race by an inch-pipe, to enable him to obtain water for the watering of horses. On the motion of Or Buchanan, seconded by Cr Schaumann, it was ie» solved that Mr Gunn's request be granted on the usual conditions. —From the secretary, Molyneux Hydraulic Company, stating that the Company would not require any more water in the meantime.—Received. —From Mr R. Ross, asking if the council would lease water to the Alexandra Lead Dredging Company, and, if sc, on what terms. After some discussion, Cr Laidlaw moved, and Cr M*Gregor seconded— That Mr Ross be informed that the council cannot at present supply water as requested. It was pointed out that the race required to be cleared of green matter, which was accumulating to a considerable extent; and it was resolved that the raceman be instructed to have the water turned off, and the race cleaned out.
—From Mr W, T. Talboys, accept-, ing appointment to represent the council at the election of trustees of the Benevolent Institution.—Received. —From the Valuation Department, Wellington, asking the opinion of the council as to whether they were in favor of local bodies nominating one of the assessors under the Government Land Valuation Act: On the motion of Cr Anderson, seconded by Cr M'Gregor, it was resolved that the Valuer-General be informed that the council was in favour of the appointment of one of the assessors by local bodies affected, —From the Chief Postmaster, Dunedin, in reply to the Council's request, stating that it had been decided to keep the private-box lobby, at the local post office, open till 10 p,m. daily.—Received.
—From the Paymaster - General, stating the sum of £l2 16s, goldfields revenue for October, had been re« mitted to the credit of the Council.— Received. —A letter was received from the secretary of the proposed Alexandra Bowling Club, asking for the grant of an area of ground 130 ft by 140 ft in the recreation ground. After some discussion, it was resolved, on the motion of Or Laidlaw, seconded by Cr Ryan, that no objection be offered by the Council to the Bowling Club, having a small portion of the recreation ground, but that they had no power to grant any title; also that the site be approved by the Council. —From Mr G. H. Stephenson, accepting appointment as the Council's representative on the Cromwell Hospital Trust, also on the Central Otago Hospitals Board.—Received. A report was read regarding the state of the fence along the boundary of the endowment, and it was resolved that Mr Jopp's offer for the sale of same be not accepted. —From Mr Kinraid, asking permission to tap the race with a one-inch pipe. The request was granted on the usual conditions. It was resolved that ten per cent interest be charged on all rates unpaid at December 31st, Resolved—That the fee for dog registration for the. ensuing term be 10s per dog, and that Mr F. Young be ap« pointed'collector. It was resolved on the motion of Cr Schaumann, seconded by Cr Ryan, that the Works Committee be empowered to have a public privy erected on the recreation ground. It was Tesolved to call tenders for extra seats required for the Town Hall and that the matter of procuring some new scenery be left in the hands of the town clerk. Or Schaumann strongly advocated that the hall be lighted with acetylene , gas. He had lately installed a gaslighting plant in bis house, and he was convinced that it was superior to kerosene-lighting. m. It was resolved, after some discussion that a price be obtained for a suitable acetylene plant. Applications for the position of dayman were read, and after some consideration, in committee, it was resolved that the application of George Hannay be accepted.
The statement of balances showed a total debit balance at bank of £30213s lid.

Anderson. A special resolution adopting the water byelaw was canied, game to be confirmed at a meeting to be held on January 16th next. The schedule of duties forjthe dayman was approved. The offer of the Acetylene Gas Company to instal an acetylene gas plant in the town hall for £3O was accepted. Messrs Davis and Ruff's tender to provide 24 new seats for the town hall, at £23 7s was accepted. On the motion of Cr Schaumann, seconded by Cr Anderson, it was resolved—That the charge for water from the Alexandra Corporation's Chatto Creek Race be 2s 6d per Government head per pay, payable in advance, no less quantity than half a head to be supplied at this rate. For each one inch pipe from the race for domestic supply, the charge to be Is 6d per week payable half-yearly in advance. The council then rose.
