Lauder Notes.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

During the past week we have experienced the heaviest rain we have had for years. It commenced to rain on Monday morning, and continued throughout the day. All low-lying ground wa« a sheet of water, and it put farming operations back for a week or so.

Our local Cricket Club held their opening day on Friday, 28th inst, when there was a fair attendance of members present, fciides were picked by the captain and deputy-captain, the latter's side winning by 11 runs This club should give a good account of itself this year, for they all seem to be able to wield the willow to advantage, while their bowling is above the average. They wound up the day with a social in the school-room at Becks, which was largely attended. Refreshments were provided by the ladies of the district. ' Dancing was kept up till 3 a.m., to tbe excellent music of Mr J. H. Mee. They play the first match of the season against Matakanui on the 9th of November (King's Birthday.)

Most of the farmers have finished their grain crops, and they are now preparing the ground for turnips. The lambing has been an exceptionally good one, and in most cases Will be up to 100 per cent. . ■■'-

I hear that a number of farmers are losing foals this year. This is to be regretted, considering the price horses are at present.

The provisional directors of the new Teviot Preserving Company are pushing on matters with all taste, and the company will be registered this week, after which the shares will be allotted and a suitable site selected for the i building, «Mt Benger Mail,'
