Volunteer Notes.
[By " Volunteer."]
The annual meeting in connection with the Alexandra Rifles will be held this (Thursday) evening, when all members of the corps should make it their business to attend. This is the fourth annual meeting the corps has held, and, judging by last Thursday night's parade, it is not likely to be the last. Sergt.-major Kibble white, who was present, informed the officers after drill that the muster was the best he had seen on his rounds this year. On the occasion of to-night's meeting, the men, being in plain clothes, will have an opportunity of airing their views and ventilating their grievances, if they have any.
A rifle match is being arranged between Civilians and Volunteers for Friday. This is, I think, a step in the right direction, as there are men among the civilians who can teach us points—and some of us badly need it. If the match eventuates (as I have no doubt it will) we should make it our business to ensure its success by rolling up in good numbers, and make up our minds to have a good day's sport. Unfortunately, there are men still whn ta k of leaving the corps, and -tmong these, I regret to say, are some of the oldest members who hav ■'■ been instrumental in raising the corps to its present prosperous state. Of course, the matter of accepting resignations rests with the commanding officer; but, for my own part, I would let them go at once, as a dissatisfied man invariably engenders a feeling of discon tent among the men. Sergeant Ohing, the rifle champion, in competing for the South Island medal on Saturday, set a big ' main ' for his brother volunteers by putting up a record. Firing at the 200, 500 and 700 yards, he made the possible at each range.
