The Holiday.

Monday, being the Kings' Birthday, was observed in Alexandra as a close holiday and the national colours were hoisted on all the flagstaff's in the town. The principal outdoor function was a public picnic organised by the local Foresters Lodge, which was to have been held at the Manorburn Nursery; but, owing to the threatening state of the weather in the morning, it was de» cided to hold the outing in the recreation reserve. The day's pleasure was marred, however, by a drizzling rain, which commenced in the morning and continued to fail with more or less vigor throughout the day. Notwithstanding this drawback, however, a goodly number of people mustered on the ground, and the younger people, in defiance of the elements, derived the most enjoyment fchey could from a variety of games that were organised. Races for boys and girls took place, and were entered into with much spirit. A largely attended .and enjoyable social was held in the town hall in the evening. A tennis match (reference to which is made elsewhere) was played between the Cromwell and Alexandra Olubs, and the games were watched with interest by a goodly number of spectators.
