ATHLETICS
ASHBURTON CLUB
CLOSE FINISH IN 220 YARDS Entries at last evening’s athletic meeting conducted by the Ashburton Amateur Athletic Club were smaller than usual, but several good performances were put up. The 220 yards handicap featured Lochhead, who was off a liberal handicap, set a fast pace, but at the turn for home it appeared that Stringer would catch him. However, Lochhead held on to his lead and beat Stringer to the tape by the closest of margins. The winner of the mile, J. Hardwick, ran effortlessly throughout the race, being content to leave his burst till the final round, when he cleared away from the field. The winner of the two schoolboys’ races, B. McPhail, has shown greatly improved form during the season, and has the makings of a fine athlete. Results were:—
