CANADA REJECTS PLAN FOR CONFERFNCE

Canada’s Liberal Government j today rejected an Opposition motion urging it to call a conference of British Commonwealth nations to discuss their mutual trade problems. Mr John Diefenbaker, a member of the Progressive Conservative Party, said that the Government should take immediate steps to convene a conference. It was essential to devise policies for the restoration of lost markets. *

The Minister of Finance (Mr Douglas Abbott) replied that he did not see what would be gained.. Canada had neve£ refused an invitation to attend such a conference, but he did not think she should take the initiative in calling one now.
