GROUNDING ON SAND BAR

MISHAP IN MOTUEKA HARBOUR (P.A.) NELSON, March 1. The Anchor Shipping Company’s new motor vessel Mamaku (Captain C. Macleod), leaving the port of Motueka for Wellington about 7.30 p.m. today, went aground on a sand bar about a quai’ter of a mile south-east of the harbour entrance. This was the Mamaku’s second visit to Motueka since going into commission in New Zealand. She was carrying 10,000 cases of fruit loaded at Motueka and general cargo from Nelson. Almost fully loaded she was drawing lift. 2in. when she left port on full tide. The Mamaku is on the sand bottom and the sea is calm. It is expected that she will be floated off on to-morrow morning’s tide.
