FOOD FOR BRITAIN
COLLECTION IN ASHBURTON AND DISTRICT Further .arrangements for the* “Food Collection for Britain” week have been finalised by the Rotary Club and Junior Chamber of Commerce and the dates decided on are from Monday, March 13, to Saturday, March 18. The Patriotic Stall, in East Street, will be open all that week for the reception of gifts of tinned food, etc., and those in attendance will be: — Monday and Tuesday, members of the Red Cross Societies; Junior Chamber of Commerce; Thursday and Friday, Rotary Club. On Saturday, March 18, the week will be concluded with a house-to-house canvass of the whole town, the organisation of which is in the hands of the Junior Chamber.
This appeal has the sympathy and support of the Red Cross Societies throughout the district, and the various branches have undertaken to do all they can, in their respective areas, to make the appeal a success. Latest advices from the Mother Country state that there is still a shortage of meats and fats, and a special request is being made for contributions of these. Donations of money will be gladly accepted, and such would be spent in the purchase of desirable foods. \ One of the young Englishmen who visited Ashburton on Monday, speaking of the food position in Britain said: “The variety of our food is still very poor and, if you are sending us parcels, for goodness sake send us fats.”
