SLAVE LABOUR
CHARGE AGAINST RUSSIA “STRICTLY SECRET” DOCUMENTS (N.Z.P. A.—Copyright) (Rec. 9.50) NEW YORK, Feb. 28. Russia to-day was accused of basing her whole economy on slave labour. The charges were made before the United Nations Economic and Social Council by Miss Toni Sender, an official of the American Federation of Labour. She gave members photostatic copies of “strictly secret” documents. These supported her allegations that Russia’s secret police had huge slave labour projects. Miss Sender said that millions of workers provided cneap enslaved labour in construction, mining, uranium digging and other vital activities. These projects formed a pivotal part of the Soviet Union’s entire economic planning. Miss Sender said the photostat* were copies of official Russian plans now in the hands of the American Federation of Labour. She said the Russian slave labour system was about to spread to China, and that 500,000 Chinese would he sent to Russia for work there. She asked that the question of slave labour be referred to the FactFinding Committee of the International Labour Organisation.
