ISRAEL SEEKING U.S. ARMS
SOME ALREADY SOLD
WASHINGTON, Feb. 26.
Britain and the United States were reported to-day to be considering an Israeli request for British and American arms and military equipment. Diplomatic authorities said that existing Israeli supplies were purchases mostly from Czechoslovakia. It was not known whether the Israeli Government proposed to pay for American supplies. The United States, before answering the request, was likely to ask Israel \o reveal how much equipment it had and to seek assurances that American supplies would be used only for selfdefence.
A State Department spokesman later disclosed that Israel had bought some American arms and equipment. The United States Government, he added, was considering a request for more and larger shipments, tie refused to give any details, but said that it Avas the Government’s policy to allow such purchases if the arms Avere to be used for legitimate self-defence.
