FIRE IN MINE

LOSS OF GOOD COAL CONDITIONS DANGEROUS (N.Z.P. A.—Copyright) (Rec. 11 a.m.) SYDNTTY, This Day.’ Teams of miners are working desperately, day and night in smoke and dust a mile underground to save a large section of the Bellbird colliery at Cessnock, in which fire has broken out. The mine ordinarily produced 1(100 tons of best quality gas coal a day. The men 'are digging but hot coal, coke and ashes. The work is confined to five minutes at a time as conditions are extremely dangerofts, due to the timbering having burned away. Because of heating, millions of tons of coal have been lost in the Cessnock area in the past two years.
