HOLLAND BREAKS RECORD

FINE PERFORMANCE IN SYDNEY SYDNEY, Feb. 26. Two Australian and two New South Wales record swere broken in the (New South Wales athletic championships at the Sydney Cricket Ground yesterday. Residential records in the shot put and javelin throw also changed hands. J. M. Holland, of New Zealand, set an Australian record when he won the 440 yards hurdles ill 52.55ec. He outclassed his rivals. New Zealand had an excellent day, as Maurice Marshall convincingly won the 880 yards and mile championships, and D. R. Batten finished second to J. Treloar in the 220 yards. Marshall’s’ time for the milei was 4.21 4-ssec, and for the 880 yards lmin 55.25ec. The times would have been faster had Marshall not held back for the final srints. The highlight of the meeting was the feat of D. Johnson in running the final of the junior 100 yards in 9.6 sec, equalling the best Austraian time for the distance. A record was disallowed because of a slight following wind. R. Weinberg established new Australian figures for the 220 yards hurdles of 23.3 secs. Peter Mullins broke the residential shot put record with 46ft 7|ins,.and a European immigrant, A. Hewelis, threw the javelin 197 ft 93in to establish another residential record.

ASHBURTON ATHLETES SELECTED The Canterbury junior athletic team for the New Zealand junior championships, to be held at Christchurch on March 10 and 11, includes B. Cameron and P. Moodie, of Ashburton. Moodie will compete in the mile, and Cameron in the 120 yards hurdles. N. Lochhead, the Ashburton athlete who recently gained second place in the Canterbury senior decathlon, has been chosen to represent the province in that event, at the national championships held at the same time.
