BAND CONTEST

C GRADE TO MASTERTON (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 24. The Masterton Municipal Band won both the C grade hymn and C grade test selection to-day at the New Zealand brass band championships. - All the bands in the hymn test were in ■good form and the standard was high. The maj'ority of the bands were well balanced and well in tune, but through overdoing word phrasing, several bands lost the continuity of hymn playing. / The test selection, in which 12 bands competed, was a perfect choice for the grade. The cycle included atmospheric “Songs without Words,” depicting May, Winter, and Spring. A sense of buoyhney was lost in the first movement by the majority of the bands.
