IMPORTS FROM BRITAIN

STATEMENT BY MR HOLLAND (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Fbb. 23. The former government preferred paying off overseas debt ±o importing goods which the people wanted and which there had been ample funds to pay for, said the Prime Minister (Mr S. G. Holland) this evening wheh an Auckland report that the average man had little chance of getting, an English motor-car was referred to Kim. While he would like to correct that position, he would also like to fall back with confidence on the statement made earlier that “you can't unscramble the eggs.” Nonetheless the Government’s efforts were all being directed toward righting the position that had ‘ occurred as a result of the former Government’s policy, said Mr Holland. The Australians, for example, were able to get English cars much more readily because their Government had not adopted the same policy as that of the Labour administration in New Zealand. He hoped the people of this country would never forget who was responsible for the position in which they now found themselves in respect of many items which could only be obtained from overseas.
