STEWART ISLAND AIR SERVICE
LICENCE TO AMPHIBIAN AIRWAYS
(P.A.) i INVERCARGILL, Feb. 23. A licence to operate an amphibian air service between Invercargill and Stewart Island has been granted by the Air Department to Amphibian Airways (Southland). The twin-engined Douglas Dolphin which wi}l be used on the service will be flown to New Zealand about Easter and the service will probably be in operation next October or November.
It is expected that a tri-weekly service will be maintained between Invercargill and Stewart Island. Other services will be conducted to various Sounds, Queenstown, and £he Southern Lakes, and glacier area in Westland. Holidaymakers will be able to reach Half-Moon Bay, Stewart Island, within 20 minutes of the take-off from the Invercargill airport. The return fare, yet to be fixed, will he about 355. Previously the only communication between Invercargill and Stewart Island was by an 18-mile rail journey and a two-hour ferry service across Foveaux Strait.
